If the card is still good, then you can get a fan for $20-$50.

If you really want to upgrade, I got a 7870 for about $180 and can run everything at 1920x1080 with Ultra details on my Core i5-3570.

I think the prices rose a little since I got mine. This one is $230, but has $30 rebate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150605&cm_re=7870-_-14-150-605-_-Product

Not sure that all translates in Euros.

PC shop guy saying you can't replace them I guess he means in context...

I had to RMA my 6870 awhile ago. Temps were outrageous. It goes to 120C...

They gave me a 7850 back. It was retail, not something refurbished. It's a lot better :)

I have a 6870 in one of my older machines. It was a decent card in its day, but any present mid range card will run circles around it. 250.00 USD can buy you a lot of performance from either AMD or NVidia. An R270 is a good starting point IMHO. You could spring a little more for an NVidia 760. An R280 might be at the top end of your budget.

Either he's trying to sell you something or he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I've replaced several fans on different cards, but not recently, so I can't say. It just comes down to how much you can spend. If you've got the money, I would upgrade as well, but if you don't REALLY want to, then replacing a fan is a pretty simple process.

shastasheen and the others have good suggestions.

I put an Arctic Accelero L2 Plus on my 6870 after its fan went nuts and it runs fine.  pretty damn cheap fix.

I don't run it in a system that's on much, mind you, but it worked like a champ when I was using the system.

Do you absolutely need to upgrade? It's pretty easy to replace the fan. All you need is something like a Accelero Twin Turbo III. No thermal paste/glue is necessary. I think that's better than upgrading just because your fan broke. It's better to build an entirely new gaming PC than to upgrade a video card from late-2010. Of course, that's assuming you originally bought your gaming PC around the same time.
