New Build (fresh OS install win7)

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone.

Tomorrow i shall be building my pc and was wondering if there are certains things you may do to get your pc up and running that i should consider.

Things like..... (i have read articles about some of this)

Making Partitions on HDD or SSD. (i will be using both)

What AV would you recommend?

Back up image and where to put it if i have no thumb drive?.... i am looking for general tips for getting my system in top shape.

Thanks.

My suggestions if you're building a new PC

- Pre-download the latest drivers for your new hardware (usually CD is out of date)

- Have the latest BIOS\UEFI on a USB so the first thing you can do is flash the motherboard and get it up to date

- Have your Windows disc\USB ready

- Once you've installed WIndows, nstall the latest drivers (downloaded previously), then run a WIndows update.

- Activate your copy of Windows as the LAST step you do (preload all your software etc) and make sure it's all working fine and dandy like cotton candy.

- Suppose make an image of your finished SOE (Standard Operating Environment) if you think it'd be easier to load than start from scratch down the track.

- If you can afford, have yourself a dedicated hard drive for Windows, and a dedicated (multiple??) for data. Storage is cheap as chips these days, I rarely do any partitioning unless it's a requirement.

Good luck.

No need to over-think the issue. OS and programs on the SSD, bulk files like movies/music, and backups if you have room on the spinner. Ideally, you'll spend 100% of your time actually using the machine - this essentially entails running programs (think opening Word and typing a document). I've never been convinced that a special partitioning scheme will enhance my experiences in doing such things, so I just go with default settings when structuring a drive.

Aside from drivers, backups, and system updates, there's really no reason that a cleanly installed operating system wouldn't be in perfect shape. There would only usually be cause for concern with systems that come from an OEM and have been laden with crapware.

Have a way of reinstalling the operating system and have a backup of your personal files. An external hard drive matching or exceeding your internal storage capacity is probably a fine solution. Alternatively, just sign up for a cloud storage solution that lets you sync local files.
