I am having a bit of trouble with some certain people using my network, they don't really understand anything about security, I have told these people about not visiting stupid scam websites, etc.... yet they somehow keep infecting their computers.... one of the computers got a virus, and my whole internet network went down until I shut that computer down, and am reinstalling windows... anyway I just decided to totally limit the computers .... what's the best free security programs? I had spy bot search and destroy, and norton antivirus before .... I am also going to set it to scan twice a day , and install Ablock, then WOT. I already tried blocking malicious websites with OPEN DNS. Obviously that didn't work... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

+theblazingangel MVC Posted July 3, 2014 MVC Share Posted July 3, 2014 I presume it is their computer that you're reinstalling Windows on and you're reassessing security options for, not your own... If they won't listen, they won't listen, there's nothing you're going to be able to do to guarantee that they won't infect it again, except taking the computer away from them. So don't expect a perfect solution. There are things you can do to help reduce risk however (the usual common advice)... - Standard (non-admin) user accounts should be used for day-to-day activities. Admin user accounts should be used for as little as possible - only for actions where it's absolutely necessary such as to install or update a program. The damage malware can do is more limited in a standard account if and when you get infected. Avoid encouraging logging in to an actual admin privileged account, prefer they use the UAC prompt instead (if you're allowing them admin access at all and not keeping that login to yourself); having the ability to login to an admin account risks it being used for more than is strictly necessary, thus endangering the system. - Be vigilant in keeping software up to date. - An antivirus application is not sufficient on its own, you need other forms of anti-malware protection too. With that said, Norton antivirus I believe does also include other such forms of anti-malware protection. - I would advise you add Malwarebytes antimalware also (it's designed to work with antivirus products btw, so no worries running both at the same time). Get the pro version, so it runs in the background all the time, I think you'll be needing that. The pro version is a pretty cheap one off lifetime license with free upgrades, a fantastic deal! Don't bother setting norton to scan twice a day, that's pointless. Just leave the real-time protection on and other protection options running. What version of norton antivirus are you running btw?
