Anyone use axcrypt?

Question

I tried using ax crypt as it was recommend as a simple free open source encryption tool to encrypt folders and files. However I right click to encrypt a file but it gives this error message.

"An error occurred when security wrapping".

I am using windows 8.1 and the latest version of ax crypt.

Anyone know why and how to fix? Thanks

Yes. The program worked for awhile then I uninstalled it and re installed it. Now it always gives this error message when trying to encrypt any file.

It is a simple program just with right click so no optoins menu or settings to go into.

what exactly are you trying to accomplish - why can you not just use efs if you want to encrypt a folder? Do you need send the archive to someone?

https://www.gnupg.org/ would be best choice of encryption of files. Paired with a front end like Kleopatra with gpgEX (shell extension for gpg) or GPA - or one of my favorites http://www.jumaros.de/rsoft/index.html gpgshell

7-Zip uses 256 bit AES and will compress the files. However, it only encrypts if using .7z format. Meaning - AFAIK, if you send someone encrypted files, they must have 7-Zip installed to decrypt them (or something that handles .7z format).

Trading encrypted files between Windows & Macs, I saw an encryption prgm for Mac - "Keka" - that handles .7z format. Don't have a Mac to personally test it & couldn't get my Mac buddy to install it.

I'm installing AxCrypt now to see if it happens to me. I used to use a program called EasyCrypto by a company called Teknum Systems, it was free, I'm not sure if it is being maintained anymore, but it was cracking, the best piece of software to ever come with a Packard Bell PC in 2001 that I continued to use for many years afterwards when the computer got scrapped.

It's a real shame TrueCrypt had its plug pulled so suddenly, there really aren't many decent free alternatives that are still maintained anymore.

If axcyrpt is anything like Windows, once you Reinstall, the new install will not decrypt the old encrypted files.

You should always keep a normal copy of your files safely stored on a DVD somewhere.

Just as a daft question, Are you running it as Administrator. That sounds like the kind of generic error message that would be solved if you run it as Administrator! lol
