HP Envy 4 Ultrabook: Keyboard not working, malfunctioning

Recommended Posts

Hi,
My 1.5 year old HP Envy 4 Touchsmart ultrabook(Windows 8) bought from USA seems to have developed keyboard issues from past week. Keyboard, I tried to press all keys, symbols like =,- are working. digit keys like "2" appears after a delay on the password form. almost no other keys working. some keys are identified differently. for e.g. if I press "m" it is identified as "ENTER/RETURN" key. I cannot login now. Even if I login, open onscreen keyboard-press any Key, it is also not working!

I tried to do a Windows restore while this problem was not frequent. but, Windows restoration to previous date also not resolving this issue. this is a backlit keyboard. What should I do? I showed to a Computer shop here and he is saying he has already 5-6 customers with the same complaint(ultrabook) keyboard malfunctioning. replacing keyboard also after few days failed again. Shop guy was saying high humidity of our place(near Kochin, Kerala state, India) which is 30kms east of Coast may be the reason apart from monsoon rain.

Do Guide whether this is a genuine keyboard h/w problem or Windows 8 driver problem or some cables etc got disconnected inside?
UPDATE: managed to login somehow, and checked typing keys in notepad, keys are malfunctioning. clear.png

My boss has had this issue with his HP laptop. Not wanting to deal with HP any longer, his solution was to use an external keyboard.

Just to make sure, I would verify that it is a hardware issue by booting into another OS (do a bootable USB Linux distro or the OS installation/recovery environment). If you do verify that it is hardware, you can replace the keyboard yourself.

The manual, which contains disassembly instructions and part numbers, is here.

I am yet to try live USB(Linux). but, I tried using my usb keyboard which also showed the exact symptoms(wrong characters typed). Onscreen keyboard also acts dead on most keys and for "m" it is "ENTER" - same as laptop keyboard problem. the BIOS is a locked down one(HP Ultrabook) and I can't find a way to disable laptop keyboard for USB keyboard.

meanwhile, I have avast antivirus installed and the properties of keyboard(on device manager) shows a avast non-signed driver aswKbd.sys .  Is this affecting the keyboard?

Quite possibly, the kbd part on the end of filename is short for keyboard ;)
