Home Based Jobs Part 2?

Recommended Posts

OK let me cut to the chase, How would you ask if a job has the option of working remotely. As you know in this (IT) industry alot of our work can be done anywhere. What with the new laws in the UK just coming into force you have the option to ask for Remote or Flexible working.

How would you go about doing this for a NEW job? One that your applying for? Alot of company's offer it but not many ADVERTISE it on their job advert.

And not to sound brash here but knowing I have an excellent skill set in an area where there is little demand for it I think this is one promising route.

Thoughts?

I have a generic cover letter that I tailor that has all the main parts in but I don't know how to slip in that I say what to sit on my arse in my lovely home and do say ESX or Windows Server Support....

Also feel free if anyone wants to give me a job, I am pretty good  :D

Are you a contractor, or looking for permanent work? I'm an IT contractor and only take on remote work. I'm very open with them from the beginning what I'm looking for and usually drop the day rate a little to 'compensate' for the benefit.

I'm not familiar with too many permanent workers who are fully remote though, although I'm sure it happens.

Permanent work, Yeah I am just going to apply for some jobs and be upfront about what I am looking for.

It does happen, I have just been for an interview for one position but they are few and far between...Or at least they are advertised as....

I usually just straight up ask in the interview.

Exactly that. It doesn't hurt to ask, if only for the reason that there might be an emergency during your usual working hours. If they turn around and tell you that there isn't the possibility, it's either a problem for you or it isn't, but it's not their problem. :)

Like I say I would ideally like to have a support job with a site to site VPN where the company didn't care I was remote, Maybe go to the office now and again but with Lync and other such things these days it is a real possibility.
