Problems with USB 3.0 in VMWare

Recommended Posts

I have read with others having this problem, but cant find an answer.

I am using VMWare Wx 10.0.3 w/ Win7 host running mint17.

I have enabled the USB Controller in VM for USB3.0 but my flash drive is not being recognized.

I can hear Windows dropping the device, but about 5 seconds later I get a little pop up in mint saying it was unsuccessful citing "Driver error."

If it matters it is the Renasses (spelling) USB3.0 chipset.

Anyone has some insight to this - I'd appreciate it.

I am a complete newb with Linux, in fact this is the longest I have used it in my life (2 days) without deleting the VM image....

I'm not 100% sure, but did you install VMWare tools? Might have trouble detecting that with standard drivers.

The usb 3.0 issue that you're experiencing has been a problem on virtual machines for a while. It's not just vmware being buggy about it but also virtualbox had this issue as well. So it's not the guest os 's fault for causing the usb 3.0 problem. I've ran a few vms using usb 3.0 but no luck on getting it resolved.

Mint has terrible VMware tools support.

Try a LTS version, compile it yourself, or use a supported distro like Ubuntu or centos

I dont know what "compile it yourself" means as I am just trying out linux for the 1st time (kinda)

I'll try latest Ubuntu, I just liked the clean GUI of mint.

I dont know enough about Linux so the GUI is all I have to go on.

Is there a fix/patch/install/etc for Logitech mice ?  I would love to use the side buttons on my mouse for going backwards and forwards in the file explorer and browser - I couldnt find anything.

Thank You, yeah I saw a few posts, and people asking for better USB3 support from VMWare - but wondered if there were others who knew of a workaround.

So its safe to assume that installing Ubuntu as a guest OS will have the same broken outcome ?

Pretty much and even windows as a guest os has same problem with usb 3.0 as well. The only workaround is setting your removable storage as a shared folder and as for other inputs device to use directly with the guest host then you'll probably be out of luck

OK, your shared folder concept is pretty clever - it achieves what I need. - great idea - thanks

Any tips for the Logitech issue I mentioned ?

:D
