I think that's a good option that you picked. Was looking at the Lenovo G710 there but it's only 10/100??? - figured by now everything was 1Gbps min.

I would say though for light gaming the HP you linked with the Intel GPU should be fine, especially for older games and you get to keep extra cash in your pocket.

Then again there might be an Asus model out there with your name on it too or are your options only from Curry's?

Am I the only one who never recommends Hewlett CRAPard ?  Unless its to someone who is an ass, then I tell them to get an HP knowing they will have problems :shifty:

Never had a real issue with Dell or hp tbh. Other than heat due to a poor performing fan, clogged up heat sink, or due rotted thermal paste or the occasional hard drive failure. Easy enough to fix or replace though.

my previous laptop was an HP

it lasted 6 years

including being dumped off a table onto a wooden floor more than 10 times lol

And that means what exactly ?

I know you are not trying to suggest that because your 1 laptop lasted a while, that ALL of them will - so I guess you mentioned that for some other reason ?

There is a reason HP is always @ the bottom of customer satisfaction.  There is a reason they have more warranty repairs than almost all other manufacturers

If you like HP - go for it - maybe you will get lucky again.  Law of averages suggest you are more likely to have a problem with HP than with many other brands - wouldn't you want to lessen your chances of problems ?  I do.

You certainly don't get value for money from Currys but if you have vouchers why not.

Also, 1600x900 isn't going to look very good on a 17" screen. At least spend a bit more if possible and go for an HD screen.

I have had a few laptops

2 * HP one last 5 years before i bought a new one (old one still works now as kids use it) and one that died recently after 6 years

1 * Acer screen died after 3 years keyboard was crap

1 * Sony hated it, sold it on

So yeah two HP laptops lasted me 11 years and the old one is still running for the kids so gonna stick with HP on this occasion, if there was a better laptop for a good price then i would have got that one, i will stick to well known brands but apart from that i dont really care

I use it for

Internet

little programming

some older games

work related stuff

gimp

and generally mucking about with

no reason for an HD screen as wont be viewing movie or newer games that take advantage of it and the resolution is a little higher than my old laptop which was 17" and was perfectly fine

It suits my needs

Can I ask what you mean by "smoked out"? I personally like to make sure something is utterly F'd before investing in something new.

10 times? I think you may be hitting the local pub a bit too often.

I have a custom-built one from PCSpecialist on the way. I could choose all the components, meaning I choose not to pay for a Windows license (saved ?60) or not to include an optical drive (waste of weight, space and money).

Intel Core i5-4210M
8 GB DDR3-1600
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M (equal to GTX 285/GTX 460/R7 260)
14" 1600x900 screen
120GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD
750GB WD Scorpio Black (7,200 RPM) HDD

?613 (+ free delivery).

Edited to "Optical Drive" as per OP's request
