I have never updated my phone before now but going to give it a try .. a question - what happens to my installed apps when I update the firmware & android version ?

Are they all lost and I have to reinstall everything or do they stay on the phone?

Your apps and data remain intact.

if you go through the official update path provided by the manufacturer or carrier of the phone then it should move all of your data / apps into a separate partition. Update the OS/Firmware and then move it all back. you shouldn't notice anything happened except now you have the new stuff.

The only apps that could change are the apps bundled by the carrier/manufacture of the phone.

Ex - Cingular Wireless has an "My Account" app, and they bundled with the phone (that you can only disable, not remove), on the update, they could remove it or change the version.

This does not apply to apps you've installed from the PlayStore, Amazon App Store, etc.

Your apps and data remain intact.

Assuming it's a factory update and not a different ROM.
