I give you props for posting it first if that's what you're looking for (based on the post timestamps) but I don't see how a comment on page 4 of a thread whose subject says MS sales doubled from last month would make it not deserve it's own thread.

Someone coming to look for the NPD results released today at 6pm should not be expected to look at page 4 of the comment on a story from yesterday.  Furthermore NPD numbers are not MS specific and that thread is in the Microsoft specific subforum.

If those numbers are credible then there is hope for Xbox One fans on MS catching up to Sony.  The only week they got dominated was week 1 and didn't the price cut go into effect on the 7th or something.  If you guess MS would have sold about 20k more that first week if it was available at the lower price then they may have edged out Sony for the month.  That bodes well for them for next month.

A separate topic for all hardware and software discussion is fine.

Those numbers are out. We know both the Wii U and X1 figures are closer to 140K and 150K respectively.

You know 180k is "more than double" right (which is what MS said)? It could very well be that for all you know. Not that vgchartz is particularly reliable.

BTW Wii U is doing okay.

I don't care about getting props. Not sure why you'd assume that.

I don't like how they combine all the platforms instead of break them out.

Really Mario Kart dominated because it sold that many on a single platform.  Watch Dogs beat it but only by combining sales across 5 platforms.  Wait till the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Minecraft are released, it's probably going to be in the charts for a long time with combined sales.

BTW Wii U is doing okay.

Since the launch of Mario Kart 8.  If you bought one at launch that's a LONG time to wait for a great game though.

Yes I'm aware, and you'll also be aware we're working with estimates. MS never announced numbers for May. We're going on the assumption they sold 77K and doubling it to get 154K minimum. All we know for a fact is it's more than Nintendo's number which we can work out closer due to a 233% increase over June 2013's NPD.

VGC also "reported" 100K+ for X1 in May, which would mean they're contradicting MS if they did "more than double" but only report 180K for June...

Until we know the actual sales numbers, then we can't say if the sales numbers are close or if the ps4 vastly outsold the X1 again.

If the numbers are close, then that could be considered a win for MS. If it is not, then that could be an issue, or it could be due to a lack of new content for that month.

Sony should really share the numbers since they were first after all.

So, um, boil all of this down. Do we have any real numbers or is this all educated guesswork?

I'm seeing you guys arguing over these numbers, but with no clear answer.

Will we get real sales numbers?

Why do we continually have these threads?  Can't we just have a U.S Monthly sales data thread the same as the Japan one.

It's guesswork. There have been a couple months where MS has released numbers (feb-April) but they haven't apart from those and Sony hasn't released any npd numbers at all so it is indeed all guesswork.

Estimates based on the details we do know. Like this month, we can get pretty close to the Wii U number because we have June 2013's data and the increase was 233% YOY.

If and when Sony have announced their milestones since the PS4 launched, it has deciphered the sales a little each time. Couple that with the numbers MS have announced and you can work out minimums each month usually, or like Wii U this month small details allow calculations.

The PS4 is outselling the XBO here in Finland, reason why? Because the XBO isn't released here yet. Same with Sweden.

Until we know the actual sales numbers, then we can't say if the sales numbers are close or if the ps4 vastly outsold the X1 again.

We, the general public, aren't going to get the actual sales numbers (at least not from NPD). NPD numbers are respected in the industry but they only give the console hardware numbers to the console makers, they do NOT release them to the public. So Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have the "actual numbers" and what we, the public, get to know is only whatever they choose to share with us. That's why my "source" for the original post was Sony's twitter post.

I'm not sure what your definition of a "win" is but even if the numbers are close that isn't what I would call a "win". If your sports team gets crushed in several games but then looses it's latest game by 1 point is that a "win" in your book? I'd say that's a good sign, great improvement, etc. but to call it a "win" you actually need to score more points than your opponents. The Xbox One is selling great though, it's not going anywhere and even with Mario Kart 8 I'm confident it's only a matter of time that it will pass the Wii U in sales despite it's year lead so MS certainly has something to be proud of.

So, um, boil all of this down. Do we have any real numbers or is this all educated guesswork?

WE (the public) don't have real numbers. Sony, MS, Nintendo, etc. DO have real numbers so claims about numbers in this forums are educated guesswork but claims by Sony, MS, etc. are not. WE (the public) do have some vague numbers like NPD does give out the % increase in total hardware sales and such to the public but not specific console sales numbers.

I'm seeing you guys arguing over these numbers, but with no clear answer.

If there was a clear answer available to the public there wouldn't be an argument about the numbers at all. Since we don't have that, and likely aren't going to get it, people enjoy speculating on what they might be based on what information we do have. It's a comment thread on a web forum what do you expect?

Will we get real sales numbers?

Only if Sony, MS, and/or Nintendo release them. They didn't last month so likely no.

Your right, that would not be a win. Its bad either way. Now that I think about it, its not even a good sign or great improvement. At best its reaching the average. There is not much to be happy about.

So, you could just said, yes, it is guesswork. Your right though, I shouldn't expect much from a web forum.

Since people are arguing over guesswork, there really won't be an end to the argument.

So, you could just said, yes, it is guesswork.

Well I wasn't sure what specifically you were referring to. If you were referring to Sony's tweet in the original post then no, it's not guesswork. If you were referring to specific sales numbers other forum posters are stating later in the thread then most, if not all, of those are probably guesswork. Some are numbers from other sources though such as VGChartz which you may or may not consider guesswork on their part. Everyone has to go by guesswork to some degree though, that doesn't mean it's not worth trying to figure out who is selling more and such. Sony only really KNOWS how many units it has sold to retailers. Microsoft only really knows how many units it has sold to retailers, etc. Microsoft and Sony don't necessarily KNOW even how many of their own units have sold to customers and how many on sitting on shelves. They definitely don't KNOW the exact sales numbers of their competitors. NPD attempts to determine how many units actually sold to customers and is generally pretty respected but technically even their numbers have a certain level of guesswork involved. NO ONE has all the actual numbers that doesn't mean it's not worth trying to figure out what is selling and what isn't and how much as best as you can.

I was talking about the numbers because there is a difference between outselling someone by 1% and 50%. People were arguing over that difference.

So yeah, guesswork.

I believe he was pointing out that we don't, in fact, know if the figures are "closer to" 150,000, as we have no clue what the figures are beyond being more than double last month. That means it could be about 155,000 or so, or it could be 90 trillion, so long as Sony sold at least one more. We don't know since Microsoft was intentionally vague and neither side gave numbers.

I know, but we also know it's not 180K seeing as VGC are unable to double a number correctly. Their info is nonsense.

VGC: 110K for May

MS: We more than doubled last month

VGC: 180K for June!!! ()

But yes, we're talking about estimates, never denied that. Most are going on the assumption that they did minimum 77K last month and 154K this month. We'll have a better idea on Sony's number as there is bound to be a milestone announced, possibly at Gamescom. The 100 million PS3, Vita and PS4 numbers gave us a small hint already 2 weeks ago.
