Hi everyone. Since a few weeks I'm having this anomaly on my laptop screen (I've recreated this in paint.net):

There is a black spot (longer than a "pixel") combined with a diagonal line where the screen colors seem lighter than on the rest of the screen. The first minutes, it was just the black spot, but then a piece of the line appeared around it. The line got longer with time, until it reached the sides of the screen.

I can't find info on the internet (it is also hard to describe).

Has any of you experienced this? If yes, what is it?

You wont find anything online except for others asking questions when their LCD starts to go bad.

Depending on your laptop - many screens are cheap to replace - but since you're asking this question - you better let someone else do it....

But - you can try "tapping" it a couple times to see if it just some weird anomaly -

Thats strange.  Generally they run horizontally or vertically, not both.

You've ensured it wasn't botched drivers causing the issue? Its there in the BIOS/POST screens or in a Live Linux boot?

Was the laptop dropped or recently rough-handled? I wouldn't be convinced its the display, more likely the graphics card/bad cap/cold solder joint.

Would not connecting an external monitor help you decide whether the problem is driver related or hardware?

Look closer and see if it a bug or something. Friend of mine had a small bug stuck behind the glass and a very similar anomaly appeared.

Aha, I bet that was a fun one to find!

No idea how it got there, probably through the edges of the display since there is a bit of space there where the glass meets with the plastic. We had to take apart the whole display to get it out. Luckily we didn't damage anything.
