1.1 Million Xbox consoles sold in fourth quarter

Xbox Platform revenue increased $104 million or 14%, driven primarily by increased console revenue. We sold in 1.1 million consoles in the fourth quarter, as we drew down channel inventory, compared to 1.0 million consoles during the prior year.

These numbers are shipped to retailers, and they do not break down the sales between the Xbox One and 360. However this is kind of alarming, even if the breakdown is somewhere around 700k for X1, it doesn't look good at all. Xbox 360 shipped 800k units from Jan-Mar this year, X1 shipped 1.2 mil in the same time, sales are lagging for both consoles.

If that is the case, then I would say ps4/ps3 sales aren't doing amazing either considering the monthly differences have not been huge between the combined 360/X1 and combined ps3/ps4 numbers.

I don't understand why anyone is suprised by this? what reason is there to go out and buy either console? There just isn't the games to really draw in any more than the true hardcores fans. Normal casual gamers aren't going to dive in when there is nothing but a few good titles, especially when the vast majority of those titles are available on the last generation consoles too.

As long as developers continue to develop for both then it reduces the chances of your casual gamer taking the plunge.

Atrocious numbers

MS need to get their thinking hats on to boost numbers, and quick.

Unless they come up with something right out of left field system-wise, drop the price to horrendously low levels or suddenly spawn a bunch of great studios to develop some must-have exclusives I honestly can't see what they can do to make Xbox seem attractive. At the moment all they're left with is a 'less powerful PS4'. Disappointing given how heavily invested I was in the Xbox ecosystem last gen.

I think they need a fresh start, I can see them bringing the next-gen much sooner (maybe 2-3 years).

Their initial launch were terrible, these shipped numbers are so low because they're selling all the stock they shipped in the first place.

It's gaining momentum fast, just annoys me to think of the console we would of got if Phil was in charge 4 years ago. Dat silicon space they have.

This is a big point, nothing good, or semi-good is coming out till fall/winter and then all the other stuff is in 2015, why should I or anyone else rush and spend $400 or more on either at this point?  I can play most of the games I want to at the moment on my PC just fine and they'll do better/look better since that's also something people always bring up.

We'll see how it goes when they have more exclusives coming out.

I think the Halo MCC edition will probably create more sales than Titanfall ever did, Destiny may do some good but again its available on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Yeah, I mean I have a 360 but I haven't played it since Tomb Raider and that was months ago.  I've been on the PC since, just not enough to get me to buy the new stuff yet.

I sold my 360 and PS3 to help fund my XB1 - I have to admit I regret that decision now. From Forza being a bit of a dissapointment to the never working Battlefield I ended up buying Minecraft for PC and have found myself playing that more of that instead.

Do we have any idea what the combined ps3/ps4 numbers were for the quarter compared to the combined xbox 360/x1 numbers? It would be interesting to see the spread.

If the numbers really are devastating, then I'm not sure what else MS can do. They listened to people around here and elsewhere that said dropping Kinect and the price would spur demand. They are also moving away from as much emphasis on non-gaming entertainment, sticking to a gaming first mantra. They have adjusted and adjusted based on feedback and so far it has not helped.

Maybe its just going to take more time and the release of more games to really kickstart demand. Or maybe those that demanded change underestimated the fallout of those changes working against a recovery.

This is exactly the same situation as last gen, except we didn't have a $300 gap between the consoles. It took around a year and a half for anything really worth buying for either console was released.

This generation is just getting started.

You have to consider that at this point in it's life compared to the 360, the Xbox One is doing better numbers.  Also the price drop didn't take effect until the last month of the quarter, when they also killed the numbers in the previous month by announcing the price cut.  We'll have to see how well it does for a full quarter at the lower price and especially going into the holidays where this year it does have a stronger lineup than the PS4.  Either way I'm sure MS expected more but it is what it is.

I still say they need to bring back their original vision for the Xbox One to differentiate themselves from the PS4.
