Algerian Jet missing with 116 on-board

Algeria's national airline, Air Algerie, says it has lost contact with one of its planes flying from Burkina Faso.

Contact was lost about 50 minutes after take-off from Ouagadougou, the airline is quoted by Algeria's state news agency as saying.

The passenger airliner, last seen at 0155 GMT, was bound for the Algerian capital Algiers, it added.

Flight AH 5017 had 110 passengers and six crew on board, officials said.

"In keeping with procedures, Air Algerie has launched its emergency plan," Air Algerie officials, quoted by APS news agency, said.

The plane is chartered from Spanish airline Swiftair.

In a statement (in Spanish), Swiftair said that the aircraft was an MD83 and that they were unable to establish contact with the plane. The plane was originally scheduled to land at 0510 local time, it said.

Flight AH 5017 flies the Ouagadougou-Algiers route four times a week, AFP news agency reported.

Yeah....another disappearing plane. What's going on with the world? Doesn't make me feel good about travelling right now.

With the number of planes in the air at anyone time, I think it's pretty safe mode of transport.

It's just when anything happens to a plane it's always causes a major event which effects numerous people at once.

If the news reported every car crash or problem on the roads there would be little time for anything else.

Maybe I'm trying to convince myself more as I'll be flying in a few months time.

Missing Air Algerie flight has crashed: Algerian aviation official

ALGIERS (Reuters) - An Air Algerie flight that went missing en route from Burkina Faso to Algiers has crashed, an Algerian aviation official told Reuters on Thursday.

"I can confirm that it has crashed," the official said, declining to give details of where the plane was or what caused the accident.

Yup ... the time to fly is NOT now it would seem.

But now is the time to invest in Airliners. Especially Malaysia Airlines.

oh man that start to get me paranoid

Yup ... the time to fly is NOT now it would seem.

Except that in reality it's not statistically different to last year, we had a similar amount of crashes this time last year and even the year before.

July 2012 - 7 crashes to date.

July 2013 - 7 crashes to date.

July 2014 - 6 crashes to date - 1 hijacking.

The difference is frequency illusion. The media knows this, and hence they play on people's fear and it seems like all of a sudden planes are just falling out of the sky. It makes them more money.

And then if you want to get into statistics. On average about 1.6 BILLION people fly every year. Since it's July lets say 800 million have flown so far, and (including this one for arguments sake) there have been 773 fatalities. So 0.009% of people who flew this year have died to crashes. Sure the loss of life sucks and I'd love to one day be able to live in a world where nobody dies due to an accident, but all things considered it's still, by a huge huge huge margin, the safest method of transportation.

But who knows when you will be one of the 'lucky' ones. ;)

But you can say the same things about driving, taking the bus, cycling, walking etc. All of which have higher fatality rates.

I'm with you... The media doesn't help either.  If one strong earthquake hits, you hear about every earthquake in the world for a couple weeks.  A month later you won't hear about any earthquake even though they happen just about every day.  The media is going to find every airplane wreck, or every airplane that has gone missing because it's peaked our interest.  We're going to hear about airplane problems for a couple weeks yet, then we won't hear about them anymore.

However 2 airplanes missing and one shot down are pretty big news items... but every day on the news you hear something new about some other plane, or at least I do.  Most of them aren't big news stories.

Any update as to whether there were any survivors?

I'm gonna guess given the 'lost contact' there wouldn't be a lot of hope.
