Comcast lying about its Internet speeds ?

Recommended Posts

Comcast?s customer care cancellation call crisis continues with a new episode, as IBTimes took a closer look at the claims made during that customer service call by the company?s representative who repeatedly said Comcast?s broadband is the fastest, wondering whether Comcast is purposely instructing its employees to lie about data speeds.

The publication cites the most recent survey from Speedtest.net and PC Magazine (September 2013), which said that Comcast was the third fastest broadband provider in the country, following Midcontinent Communications and Verizon?s FiOS.

However, during the call that went viral the other week, a Comcast employee kept repeating that Comcast offers subscribers the fastest Internet in the country. ?You?re not interested in the fastest Internet in the country?? the rep asked during the call, repeating a variation of the phrase a few times.

Meanwhile, a Comcast PR person asked about the matter told IBTimes that the company does not claim to be the fastest in the country, nor does it train its customer care reps to make that claim. The publication then took it upon itself to try to get same sort of claims from Comcast, posing as a potential customer looking for information, but it had no such luck.

?Asked if Comcast?s Xfinity is faster than FiOS, one phone rep said it depends on a variety of factors, such as the area of coverage and the particular package a customer chooses,? the publication writes. ?When we asked flat-out if Comcast is the fastest in the country, the rep said such superlatives are more about ?technology bragging rights? than any individual customer?s experience, and that in reality, the two companies are constantly trying to one-up each other with faster options. In the broadband arms race that is the 21st century, that?s probably true enough.?

Here is the deal... Comcast charges different prices for different speed packages depending on where you are. To me this is just stupid and really hurts its customers since instead of everyone tied into their revenue feed they base those packages and prices depending on who else is in those areas that can supply internet. For me I have Comcast and the only other providers in the area are the local phone company with DSL which isn't as fast but close (at least its a dedicated line vs a shared node) and satellite broadband that is crap and has a really low cap. See Comcast knows this and so they can charge my area such high prices for such low speeds of internet. We just recently got a upgrade for no additional rise in costs but the upload is still lower than what I think it should be. I currently get 105/10 which regular price is around $75/month and to me that is just insane and way too high so I normally just complain and threaten to switch to DSL and they give me a promo rate for a while which works when that period runs out as well. I get a speedtest normally showing around 90 down and 11 up however IMO it should be twice as much upload. If I could get the higher upload speeds I could do much more than I already am for my hobbies such as gaming.

Lets not forget that the customer was calling to cancel his service while the reporter was pretending to be a potential customer.  Those are two entirely different things.

...god, that call was awful.  I couldn't listen to it, it was just horrible.
