Amazon reports $126m quarterly loss

Recommended Posts

Amazon has reported a loss of $126m (?74m) in the second quarter and warned that sales could slow in the current quarter.

Amazon forecast third quarter sales of between $19.7bn and $21.5bn, which could mean sales growth of as little as 15% - well down on previous quarters.

Amazon has traditionally survived on thin profit margins, but investors have been reassured by strong sales growth.

But today's warning over sales has spooked investors.

In after hours trading in the US shares slumped by 6%.

Perhaps not unexpected. The whole drone thing, the Fire phone, etc, etc is going to eat into profits, but long term could pay big dividends. Amazon has always been a "big picture" kind of company.

Amazon tried to screw me on the 'free' shipping a couple of times  -- so no  sympathy here.

How exactly, because their shipping is clearly labeled on all items. You misread something

I still think they TOTOALLY screwed up on their phone.

They should have practically gave the phone away or least made a little profit on them. Not sell them unsubsidized for $600

You are putting your Ecosystem in peoples hands.

Amazon has taken on some big projects lately. Whether or not theyre worthwhile has yet to be seen.

that being said, that's a pretty big drop in a single quarter. i wonder what their official explanation is.

I did not misread 'free shipping on orders over $35.'

One time my order was over 100.

I clicked off on FREE shipping.

I was charged anyway.

Had to complain to get back the shipping charge.

I recently placed another, over 35 dollar order.

I made sure to check the final screen, then cancelled, since there were more shipping charges.

Constantly pester about Amazon Prime.

They are way desperate.

Probably a weak economy keep people from buying extra goodies.

And I have noticed, Amazon does not always have the best price.

My only problem with shipping was the whole if it's not from an amazon warehouse, it doesn't qualify thing... or must be prime eligible, etc.. I generally only order from amazon fulfilled sellers and never had a problem with being free... when I see a shipping charge, usually goes back to the seller, find another seller and fix the issue...

You must have ordered an item that was from Amazon or Fullfilled by Amazon which said "Orders over $35 get free shipping" then another item with that order that was from an outside vendor, which does not quality for the free shipping. So you are going to end up paying shipping on both items since you did not cross that $35 threshhold for qualifyling items.

I can 100% promise you that this wasn't Amazon at fault.

I wonder how many Prime subscriptions were canceled with the price increases and that you can't opt-out of things like streaming, etc? I use Amazon a lot, though, so it kind of stinks to see them having a loss this big.

I think Amazon needs to reign in it's product lines.  Get rid of the Android hardware and stick to e-readers.  Only make apps for the music, video, kindle, and whatever other services they have.

I'm sure it's to do with your account setting for your default one click postage option. Whenever I checkout, the paid postage option is always selected, I have to manually change it to free shipping.

More people are finding and shopping through cheaper alternates (including myself). Competition is a great thing.

Prime member myself. Have been since Prime was first offered. I am ashamed to say Amazon delivers to my house no less than twice a week. Sometimes more. Much more.

As a Prime member I do only purchase Prime Eligible items 98% of the time. That keeps it always free shipping no matter what.

The best part of Prime to me is being able to share it with family members. My wife also has Prime, as do my parents, and so do a couple of my other relatives. 5 total. That's a pretty sweet deal in itself.

Also use all of their included Prime services regularly.

Honestly Prime pays off for myself in a huge way, even with the increase, so I no doubt hope things stay exactly as they are for Amazon.

If you consume Prime video, the Fire TV is AMAZING!

I was super close to trying the try it for free 30 day program for the Fire TV, but then common sense prevailed. I have 4 devices already that are capable of playing Amazon Video on just my entertainment center, so while the voice search and all of that would have been nice, I opted for not having one more gadget. Who knows though, I still may get one.

Actually my parents are the ones I think would benefit from it the most. They use Amazon Video the most out of everyone. My dad loves it as they have a lot of older movies. Like from the 50's to 70's movies. So my recommendations are always a bit of a mess LOL

It's also fun to sideload Emulators onto it :)

I don't think the Fire Phone is going to go anywhere, expect a bigger loss in a future quarter.

Umm what else do you actually use a Prime subscription for besides the streaming? That 'free' shipping isn't actually free. They just build it in to the price. Go shop around and you'll see what I mean.

The Fire phone is obviously a burning platform.

I only use Prime for the 2-day shipping.

Online sales TAX is to blame, and the price increase of Amazon Prime. Still, with all that said, it's still the easiest way to shop for anything.

Wish everyone would just charge sales tax already, it's already annoying as heck trying to figure out use tax when state taxes come due...

I guess it's easier over in the UK because almost everything get's the same amount of tax, but it surprises me that sales tax isn't included in the listed price.
