My PS3 has gotten the YLOD

Recommended Posts

My PS3 Phat (60GB well now 250GB) has been in my bedroom for the past few months.  Primarily our Netflix box (and my Super Puzzle Fighter II box as well  :D ), has given up the ghost and now has the dreaded YLOD..

I think my wife is almost as distraught as I am.  Can someone tell me if this works:  Much appreciated...

No, this is a lazy man's alternative to using a heat gun on the solder inside.

You have a better chance of warping the casing than anything else due to the way the PS3 is enclosed. The caps and solder are shielded inside many layers down under the BD drive and fans etc.

He mentions it's a temporary solution because again it's a lazy "solution". Using a heat gun or reflowing would result in a proper fix, but you need to know what you're doing. Don't use a kitchen oven

I only need a temp fix... I just want to get my X-Men: First Class Blu-Ray out of it...  I'm currently scoping out a PS3 slim...

I can take it apart, that doesn't bother me.  Built enough PC's (and cleaning thermal paste) and what not, to know how this goes...

here's what i got from a bit of googling. you should be able to get your disk out this way

try switching off the PS3 from the back, then hold the eject button then switch it back on, wait until the light goes green then the fans will be at 100% speed and then soon after the disc will eject itself!

If the "fan cycle" Brando posted doesn't work you can just disassemble the whole console / BD drive to get it.

At some point Sony removed the fan cycle, but I'm can't remember if it was a hardware revision or firmware which did it.

Now that I'm sitting here thinking about it.  Maybe I'll swing to a Staples or Radio Shack and see if they have some Artic Siver 5 on the shelf.  $13 vs $200 is a no brain'er....

I'll try the fix myself first...

My wife is talking about takin the Roku out of the living room temporarily until I fix or replace it.

Maybe I'll bring the 360 up for a little bit.  Since I have a media remote for it.

Aren't drives supposed to have an emergency, manual eject button? You usually use a paperclip to press a button which releases and forces the disc.

Not all slot loaders have them sadly, including the original phat PS3s. They added a manual eject to the first Slim model where you use screwdriver to turn the gears.

Find out what part has failed, purchase cheap spares & repairs PS3 - Take apart and repair

Happened once with me and to a mate, took a maximum of 2 hours to fix (after parts arrived)

Alternatively if you didnt want to fork out on a PS3, time for an upgrade? :)
