How to make sure my laptop GPU is turning off when games not running?

Question

I have a new laptop with an Intel HD 4600 GPU (on the CPU) and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M.

How can I make sure the discrete GPU is winding down when it's not needed? (to save battery, to reduce overall heat etc.)

If you set the GTX as the primary adapter in the BIOS the CPU graphics shouldn't be used at all.

That's not what he asked for and that doesn't control switching.

This should be brand agnostic,  but read this to see which is running.
