Adguard adblocker destroys adblock plus, less ram, cpu etc

Question

I was looking at the most popular downloads on softpedia and i saw adguard adblocker which i had never heard of, it turns out it is incredible!

Here is info about it: http://forum.adguard.com/showthread.php?1662-Adguard-for-Firefox-open-beta-test

It uses less cpu and memory, i tested with around 14 tabs and my ram usage was 53mb in chrome, adblock plus uses 101mb with the exact same tabs! The other amazing thing is that it is incredibly easy to manually block images, frames etc, here are some screenshots:

The addon is free for all browsers but if you want child protection filtering functionality enabling you have to pay. The chrome version is in the chrome store, firefox version is available here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adguard-adblocker/

Noooooooo!

Don't tell me I've been worshiping a lesser god!

I think this addon has only been available for a short period, the firefox version is currently only available on the webpage, it hasn't been approved yet to go in the store itself so you haven't been worshiping a lesser god for a long time :P

Hrm will have to try that one later. Right now using the paid AdGuard resident program myself, absurdly good. Personally done with browser extensions as it does the job before it even gets to the browser, speeds up page loading/processing time tremendously. The program actually got me to switch from Firefox to Chrome full time as feeble ad blockers were a show stopper for me. Also can cover all browsers in the system at the same time with one global rule-set, plus can act as a proxy server and it'll even supposedly filter Modern apps if you tell it to.

Moved to the Software Subforum.

Just a FYI, Neowin receives its revenue from the support of advertising (as well as subscribers). Using ad blocking software obviously detrimental to our cause on this site. I just wanted to throw that in here.

Doing this at the edge of the network with a secure gateway/router is a far better solution imo

  • Centralised block list for all devices only need to update one.
  • Blocks adverts on all devices not just PCs with no software to install (Windows Phones, Smart TVs etc)
  • Using VPN Dial in it can block adverts on remote networks using the same centralised block list.

There is a white list that is enabled by default, neowin staff should contact the adguard developers and ask if they will put you on it in exchange for maybe doing a review and posting it on your main page or something.

I just tried this on firefox right now, normally my firefox with dozens of tabs open uses 2.4-2.8GB of ram with adblock plus, it is using under 2GB right now, that is 400-800MB less. This is NUTS!

UPDATE: Normally with these tabs open firefox fluctuates between 17% and 33% cpu on my core i5 430m laptop with this i'm fluctuating between 10.3% and 27.6%. The average is probably 7% less cpu i would estimate. I had no idea adblock plus was responsible for so much of the high firefox.exe cpu usage, woah!

I can confirm: page loads are much faster and lower ram usage.

which O.S did you test on and which browser? I'm using the windows versions, not sure if the addons work on linux or not.

Yea AdBlock is very effective at what it does, the functionality is excellent (well the Firefox version anyway).. but terms like "lightweight" or "high performance" probably won't ever be used to describe it. Probably using EasyList, that's a lot of data it has to go through (including regex parsing) each time a page loads, and Firefox's engine is kind of pokey to begin with. The Chrome version was a big "meh" overall, less functionality, only hides instead of totally blocking, etc etc.

$20 a year

Using their OS-level version of the program, totally worth it personally. If you want free, there's alternatives, but I don't regret the decision to buy it in the least. Tried Privoxy for a while, doesn't hold a candle to it, and as mentioned above, browser extensions come with a lot of baggage makes a big impact.

Admuncher 5 should be out soon and that'll be free. So will probably use that since it supports most browsers. Altho havent really noticed the memory usage,  with 8 GB, and sites load pretty fast here with an SSD

the addon is free, the child protection functionality and other functionalities cost $20/yr or a lifetime licence for a higher price.

The only problem i'm having is trying to block a background image on gossipcop.com, with adblock plus i can right click and block the .jpg but i can't highlight only .jpg files only frames which is annoying.

Ad Muncher has been useless as of late, especially when it came to https youtube - can't block ads at all. Happy with Adguard so far, but hopefully Ad Muncher 5 with https support comes out before my Adguard trial expires as I have a lifetime licence.

The extensions work fine on Linux (Firefox, Chrome and Opera). Also Mac too!

To whitelist Neowin, add this rule to your filters (I know I have!):

@@||neowin.net$elemhide,content,urlblock,jsinject

You can reduce the memory footprint of adblock plus by disabling the filters that haven't blocked anything in the time that you've had it installed. That's likely more than 95 percent of easylist right there.  Only problem is that there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do that.

As for the adguard extension, I don't see a big memory difference.  Really clean interface though.  There isn't a way to check or edit what each list is blocking.

Wonder what would happen if I used the adguard filter in adblock plus? (failed: not a valid filters list)

Murray Hurps is a wack job, and it appears that Jeffrey Cole has abandoned ship. I think that goes along with Murray Hurps giving all his worldly belongings away, I think he owned the ship :)

Yet, he is still charging for 4.x of AdMuncher. Maybe he is not so committed to the sheading of all his worldly belongings in order to give away AdMuncher 5.

Don't hold your breath on ever seeing AdMuncher 5, head on over to AdGuard to get an AWESOME AdMuncher replacement.

Make SURE you whitelist Neowin :)
