Which console should I get?

Recommended Posts

For an 8-10 Year old I'd recommend neither. I think Wii U should be the system of choice for that age group.

Edit: This leads me to believe the question is actually, which system should I buy that I want that I can also share with my 8-10 year old children. In that case, the answer is, pick the system with the games you want, or the one your friends have. They are both very similar devices

I think you'd be best off getting a Super Nintendo. It is cheap and has excellent games. There are no online interactions, so no paedophiles to worry about. Lots of kid friendly games. No monthly service charges, patches, DLC, DRM, or games that no longer work because the server is shut down.

Plus your kids will appreciate games and technology better if they play the classics.

Yeah, actually screw the Wii U, do what Enron said :).

Or get a Wii U and still be able to play many of the classics.

I'm seriously considering getting a Wii-U for the Nintendo titles.  They have lots of kid friendly games seems like.

Xbox One has good parental controls so you can easily limit their access to what ever you want. I am not sure how the PS4 is for that but Microsoft usually does a good job with anything like that. Also the gold sharing is great for family's so you only have to buy it once for one account then everyone on that console has it. I would just go over the features of each and find which has the features you are looking for and what you think your kids would like.

First, it's for my nephews, so not much fun for me. :)

Second, I have no clue want games they want/like. But I can tell you this, they like minecraft. They play block heads on my phone too.

**i was under the impression that the wii is losing market and dying. is that true?

The Wii U hasn't sold very well and big publishers are skipping it for some of their titles, but Nintendo only make games for their console (Wii U) and their games are always family friendly.

Minecraft will be available on both the PS4 and Xbox One. (Set for August/September release)

Ask them what they would prefer? or ask their parents if they've been asking for one?

The PS4 is the more popular console with close to 9 million sales,, but the xbox one is also doing pretty well with 5 million sales.

Both will have a selection of family friendly games but currently the only exclusives I can think of are Knack and Resogun for the PS4 and Kinect Sports Rivals for the Xbox One. There are a few multiplatforms ones.

I think either would be a good pick, I personally bought my nephew and niece a xbox one and they were very happy with it. But that was because the PS4 was sold out at the time and the only choice was Wii U or Xbox One.

p.s Kids don't seem to like playing kid games.

for an 8-10yr old, i dont think either is appropriate at this point. The Wii U has many more kid-friendly games as well as great games for adults.

whoever said to buy an SNES is hilarious. it's completely true! an 8yr old wont know the difference!

A PS3 or 360 would be a better choice IMO (if neither is owned).

Was just about to say the same thing.

A young kid won't care about the latest graphics/games. So a PS3/360 would do. They're cheap to pickup and have a huge range of games for it... also cheap.

Definately get xbox 360 or PS3.      HUUUUUGE catalog of games for cheap!      go to any good used games store and look at the prices.  the kids will have tons of fun, without breaking the bank.

Absolutely no reason to invest soo much money into One or PS4, for kids that did not play all good games from last generation.

how about something like that? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/microsoft-xbox-360-4gb-holiday-bundle-with-kinect-and-2-games/1817194.p

you have kinect, and two family friendly kinect titles - sports and adventures.     then they can get any game they could possibly want from a used game store.

that would be what i get for my nephews

ps. if you want a more current system, then get a wii U.  just nintendo exclusives will keep them going for a while. i though it was dying too... but as it is right now, there are barely any good games on PS4 or Xbox One... and there wont be much until next year.  and the ones that are good, are for much older kids, and/or are short!

Wii exclusives on other hand, can keep you playing for many many hours more. and are great fun for whole family.      so get that one, together with Super Mario 3D World and latest mario karts!

Minecraft is better on a PC so if they already play it on a PC they should stick to that. For a console I would recommend a Wii U as well. Xbox and PS has Minecraft but like I said it is much better on PC.

I'm pretty much set on an xbox 360 bundle with kinect. However, they come with 4gb hdd, i assume this is not enough for gaming?

not sure, maybe someone else knows.  i only had xbox 360 for 1 month, and mine came with a huge hdd.         however, i assume you don't have to install to play?  maybe it will just load slower...   not 100% certain though.

It's for disc games. If you play mostly digital, it's not going to work well.

Definitely buy a HDD, even if you play retail games they quickly eat into that 4 GB with patches or DLC for compatibility (even if you don't buy the DLC).

Some games also have "install discs", eg. GTA V, Forza 4, which will require more than 4 GB.

If you don't want to buy a HDD, you can use 16 GB flash drives. More info on that here

  • 2 weeks later...

I've long gone stopped looking at console as something competitive :) I think I'm just way to old today to even care about that stuff.

I think for an 8-10 year old Xbox One / Xbox 360 w/Kinect will be a better choice because Kinect will make their experience with cool MS games great.

My friends have kids that age and they LOVE it. They jump, they dance and all the fun and active stuff Kinect brings.

I think PS4 as always with Sony is really a good gaming machine with media support but I think for that age Xbox w/ Kinect is hands down a better choice.
