Hotel Charges Man $127 For Three Bottled Waters

Recommended Posts

Edward Heaton had a business meeting at the five star Wellesley Hotel in Knightsbridge, London. It was hot they opted to sit outside on the cigar terrace of the Crystal Bar, and order three small bottles of San Pellegrino sparkling water. After the meeting concluded, and Mr. Heaton requested the bill, imagine his surprise, when the total came out to $127.

That bar had a minimum spend of ?75 so they charged him the difference after the water etc.

Hotel charges $50 for three bottles of water is still insane.

That said, that stuff is stupidly expensive everywhere. I was with someone who was buying it once and when it went though the register I assumed it was wine or cider or anything other than water.

The water cost $17. This guy didn't pay attention there was a minimum spend at the bar, that's where the extra $50 came from.

It sucks that he didn't notice the minimum >.< but I always wonder how things like this end up as news stories...? We've all done something silly or unfortunate and had to pay for it--literally or figuratively. How does this happen? I wouldn't even know *how* to involve the news even if I wanted to.

Opps, read it wrong (thought it was $16.50/bottle).

is minimum spend thing legal in london?

I'm sure it is, especially at nice hotels. London is not a place you choose if you want to do things cheaply.

There is a restaurant here in Chicago, that in the downstairs bar on weekend nights they charge $75 just to sit down at the table, no water included. The place gets packed on the weekends. The restaurant offers some of the best sushi in Chicago btw.

Went to an exclusive terrace (named after a relatively expensive brand of champagne) of a (known to be) expensive restaurant, in a fairly high-end hotel in Knightsbridge - he clearly wanted to show off.

You chose the location of your meeting based around the return it will yield (long or short term).

Even if I have a lot of money to expend... I will not go a restaurant that charges you so much even for just to sit in a chair.
