Sony: Q1 2014 Financial Results

Recommended Posts

So year over year, the numbers are up for Sony in all categories except for smartphones and camera. Not surprising since they did not have a new console this time a year ago.

So look at Q4 vs Q1, we see that they are up in smartphones, tvs, and portable systems. However they are down in console sales and software sales. The software sales drop isn't shocking considering the lack of big releases for the quarter. The console sales dip could just be an aberration, reflection of typical sales for the season, a drop in ps3 sales, a sign of some saturation of the market, or even reaction to the X1 price drop.

All in all, not bad numbers at all.

Only 200k less than the previous quarter is very good considering Q4 was the holiday period and shortly after the release of the PS4.

But I think the high numbers for Q1 2014 is partly because of back-orders. Sold-out stock at release and in Q3, which ment people got their PS4's in Q1 2014.

I expect the numbers to drop sharply in Q2 just because the initial surge of early adaptors would have got their PS4's by then and now its just regular consumers.

Yeah, we have to be close to the saturation point from early adopters. Since Sony launched in so many regions so quickly, its not shocking that they would still be filling back orders well into Q1.
