Creating your own Linux Distro

Recommended Posts

@RKWJ25

i highly appreciate your efford and i like what i am seeing so please dont take this as a try of mine to hijacking your thread - if feeling unconfortable with it this posting can be deleted ofc - but i was just wondering today that thanks to some tools like remastersys i would love to create my own linux distro, it will be kde based so targeting some completely different group and i have not tried it yet, so this is completely theoretical right now  - but would anyone have an interest or the knowledge to go with me? maybe we can also merge i would be open for that idea as well.

my idea by now is to go on a kubutu 14.04.1 x64 base, including java 8, conky manager, firefox with several plugins like an adblocker by default, dolphin+ instead of dolphin, kde connect, a link ot airdroid, dropbox and copy, jdownloader, luakit, splashtop (instead or additional to teamviewer), latest libreoffice, and a few more.

i know i will have to check first if thats even legal to include but these would be the basics...

here is the update and what i have currently achieved. i successfully built an .iso file (2.8GB size) with relinux, however it refused to boot on virtualbox. turns out that i have to aufs patch the kernel, which i am doing now. since my notebook is slow, this takes a few hours.

I don't know what this thread is about, but for people wanting make their own linux distro, http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ is a great resource.

this thread is more about having a beginner friendly distro like ubuntu with custom apps and tools installed and make it available as live cd or usb for others.

Well, then https://susestudio.com/ is a helpful tool to introduce people into linux and package managment

this is not what im intending to do.

what i wanna offer is a ubuntu kde based distro with many apps pre-installed according to my own choice and some goodies. this looks to be nearly impossible to achieve with any solution.

the closest i can come to is with remastersys.

here is what i got so far: i managed to successfully build an custom.iso, it includes the apps, however not the settings (this goes especially for the custom icon set i want to include).

and now if i wanna do a full backup, no luck, it says file too big. i will have to work on this.

another annoyance is that remastersys only works with the 3.13. kernel (other kernel leading to aufs failure and the patch i tried to apply is not working), which honestly is a bit of a joke, as my intention was to include yesterday released 3.16 kernel.

however i went for the 2nd best option which is that you will find a kernelinstaller link in the homerun-startmenu which will update you to 3.16 automatically  (the next time you boot your system, its running 3.16)

so all i need to complete now is to find a way to have remastersys backing up my home directory that way, that all the settings are applied (for example the firefox addons, iconset, etc.).

i fear the worst because i really spend all day trying to find a solution for this and its kinda frustrating.

the backup plan would be to just save the image as a disk image via clonezilla but would that be system independant then or not? i dont know.

and my intention is only to publish this if i can have the goodies and stuff included and i hope i will find a way.

With susestudio, you can choose your desktop environment, and you can choose preinstalled packages and apps. What else do you want

You can use DD to create the image of the disk. It'll also be system indepdent cause its Linux. It loads drivers on start up. Linux is a LOT more free when it comes to moving it around to different hardware

but there is a reason why i use ubuntu/deb based distro. and i already wrote what my goal is. sure, if you just want a desktop environment and some preinstalled packages, you can use susestudio, but then i dont see any sense in releasing a custom distro if thats all...
