vmware vs rdp

I have been trying to google this, but could not find what the difference between the two.

 

I've used rdp session to get into an instance previously, but now iI think about it, (for ex) i can use a vmware to use windows on a macbook (or you can connect vmware to control over the monitor).

 

i mean they all seem pretty similar to me? maybe I should not have given the example of mac, but anways, can someone please explain it to me in a simple manner what the difference between the two is and give me a simple example?

This really depends on what you are trying to do.  At this point I believe we are talking Horizon with View.  If you are looking to control a couple of boxes, this product is not for you.   Horizon View is to manage multiple Virtual Machines and delivery them to everyone.    

 

If you are looking at deploying virtual machines for a team of people, then it becomes time to look at what you really are looking to do.  If it is just virtual machines that do not need a lot of day to day hand holding, (I call them fire and forget machines), then Microsoft RDP would work fine.  If there is a more complex requirement, People logging in on a day to day basis in a Kiosk Mode with resets every night for example, this is where Horizon View comes into play.

 

If it is for a single machine, RDP is the way to go.  If you are setting up an entire farm to handle hundred of thousands of machines, then I would look at VMWare or Citrix solutions.

You cant find the difference between the two because you are asking the wrong question(s) They are different technology's really.

 

The only thing I can think of is that RDP would rely on an IP Address or DNS Name but if you are using the VMWare client you wouldn't need the IP Address or DNS Name to connect (Besides the management server your already connected to but that's a given). 

 

RDP is a way to control a Windows Server Remotely.

 

VMWare (I assume you are talking about the tools) is a way to MANAGE Virtual Servers regardless of what they are, OS wise etc. 

 

If I am not mistaken you cant get the VM Ware tools for Mac (VSphere Client), Windows Only. Then again I haven't really needed to look as I always have used Windows.
