Clamshell MBP extended use?

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if anyone has ever used their Mac laptops for very long periods of time in clamshell mode, and ever experience issues. Issues where say heat might screw up the screen or anything of that nature?

Thinking of just replacing my iMac with the laptop, and use an external display 99% of the time. Just afraid of heat.

Can't say I have, just crank up your fan. Also, you could just like put a piece of foam between your screen and keyboard to allow it like an inch of air, if you know what I mean. I don't foresee heat damaging the screen, but then again I'm not an engineer. I did however, have my Mac in 120F heat in Afghanistan, and watch movies on it. Never had a problem, except with the dust and sand.

I've been using it for periods of up to 7 hours for a few consecutive days and my MacBook is still doing fine.

I use it almost all day in clamshell mode (12+ hours) and live in a country where at this time of year the average temperature is 45 degrees centigrade.

I have had zero problems, and regularly play games and have the CPU running at 100%.

I do this everyday with my rMBP at work and home. This thing is in clamshell 99% of the time and its being used for the 10 hours at work and another 2-4 at home for work. Then I occasionally use it for personal stuff. I have had no issues and apple definitely thought about "clamshell" mode when they introduced it / people started using it more. The computer doesnt get any hotter then it would. Actually I think mine runs better in clamshell because all of the air is being pushed straight out the back instead of being split down the back and up.

So, go for it! Its wonderful. I love having such a powerful workstation thats also extremely portable. I was never about that 7lbs+ laptop life.
