You do realize that when cats rub up against you it's not because they have any sort of affection for you, they just want to rub their scent  all over you.

^ I don't really believe that's true, from my experience.

Most cats will not get affectionate with me until they get to know me, after a while.

And they could choose a table leg instead of me.

Along with the purring while they rub, I'm sure they have some emotions.

My cat will also lick my arm or hand sometimes, which also seems affectionate.
