SSD Crash

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am new here. I have been using a ocz vertex plus r2 ssd drive as my main drive. Slowly it was being maxed out and I kept telling myself I gotta empty stuff before it crashes. Well, I never did and it got filled to the max and now it isn't even recognized in the bios.

Any suggestions?

I am sure this matter was discussed before so if you can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

not Vertex related, but i've had issues where the BIOS wont detect my SSD. I've tried reseating while powered off and while powered on. eventually it'll just recognize again in the BIOS.

if i were you, i'd try different SATA ports and reseating first.

Happened to me once too.

Thanks for the reply. Would it help to bring it into a recover shop?

Probably not. Normally once an SSD is dead that is it. Some manufactures are able to do recovery but it is very expensive and they offer no guarantee it is possible.

Intel SSD's have or had probs with their firmware. And they can disappear while rebooting and can disappear in the BIOS. So if yours is an Intel, I would update the firmware on it. If you havent yet

The Intel forum I checked out just the other day (if you have an Intel SSD ) one possible reason (so Intel say) is if you use a displayport cable. It had something to do with pin 20 on the cable

Recovery shops if they are even able to do anything (very SLIM chance) will charge you thousands of dollars. I've seen some estimates in the $10,000 range. LOL.

From another web site:

I got this from Crucial Support: plug the power cable into the drive, but not the data cable, leave it for 30 min, unplug for 30 seconds and repeat. After two power cycles the SSD may come back to life ? mine did!

Not sure where you heard those numbers, but that was either BS or a special case.  Forensic labs will usually charge anywhere from $600-$1500 depending on size of amount needing to be recovered.  If RAID is involved the price can increase.

I have never heard of a recovery job costing more than $1200 and I used to work for a company who had a clean room lab for forensic recovery.

Gotcha but that's probably for HDDs am I right? SSDs are totally different.

In any case, yes it was a special case also which was why I said I've seen some estimates in the..... didn't say ALL were like that :p.

Hello,

Have you tried disconnecting the SSD, attaching it to another computer as a secondary drive (perhaps using a USB to SATA adapter or disk enclosure) and seeing if it can be read?

When I left the company, we started offering the service on flash drives, SSD were not really out on the market yet.  You are correct they are totally different.

On a traditional hard drive, they take apart the drive in a clean room and re-assemble the pieces with known good parts - and if a platter is bad, they dip it in some liquid that amplifies the little grooves of data.

An SSD - ... not sure how that would be done  :

Roger - yes we would boost the price for businesses -- another reason I left that company - I told them their business model was not going to work for long -- you cant rape a person and hope they come back for more.

I felt pretty vindicated 2 years ago when they closed all of their Texas stores :D
