OSX Update question

Recommended Posts

So I have been reading online about updates for Mac OS to upgrade to latest Mavericks because have been thinking about buying a used mac. However I find this very interesting with Apple and very stupid.

An iMac 2007 or later can upgrade to OSX Mavericks howevever Apples most expensive machine the Mac PRO can only upgrade if its 2008 or newever. I did my research and not to my suprise the Mac Pro blows the iMac specs out of the water.

So why can a 2007 iMac  model be updated to Mavericks but not a newer 2008 Mac PRO not upgrade to Mavericks when the system requirements exceeds that of the 2007 iMac??

I have done my research and if it is not on Apples supported models it wont upgrade.

Any logic to why a better Mac Pro and Newer can not upgrade but an older iMac can???

Basially you spend 2,000 dollars  or in many cases more money only to find out you can only upgrade your Mac for 5 years ?? ( Mavericks came out in 2013 ) If I bought a PC top of the line and spend thousands on it i would be able to upgrade to newest windows versions for 10 or more years.

But back to original question of why older  iMac can update but not newer mac pro.

I think its about EFI 64-bit (UEFI - newer type of BIOS) support. Although current Mac Users can explain and shed some more light on it.

The sort of customer the Mac Pro is aimed at doesn't use a computer more than 3 years old.
