How much will Windows 9 cost for Windows 8.1 users?

Do you think I should upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 or (at this point) wait for Windows 9?

 

I don't want to drop $100 and turn around to have to drop another $100 on Windows 9 sometime next year.

Personally, it's more or less a year, if 7's working for you I'd wait, especially if you don't want to pay for two updates.. at least wait and see what it'll really cost. I wouldn't be surprised if it's dirt cheap or even free, but *shrug* it's just speculation.. too early to be asking that as there's no real info yet.

7's got plenty of years left in it, it works and all that, and going thru the motions of reinstalling, tweaking, customizing, blah blah can be quite a chore depending on how much you want to change things. 8.1 is a solid OS, has some nice new features even for the Modern haters, but is it worth the hassle/money just to do it again later? Eh tossup.

That said I've already done just that, it's a solid upgrade, one system left in the house running 7 still, I don't regret it. Half tempted to bang out that last system today and be done with it. But if you're on the fence, I'd probably wait for real info first.

If MS wants the store to be successful in the consumer market without the help of pirates the price needs to be low. I would say the full version should be around 70-80$ and the upgrade around 40-50$.

 

I agree with Max you should wait for 9 probably Windows 7 is still a solid os.

It is up to you but Windows 7 is still supported until 2020.

 

You can upgrade to 8.1 if you want to or wait until Windows 9 comes out.  

 

It is your decision. Not ours.

 

It is about preferences. If not like it, you can format and reinstall Windows 7.

 

 

About the cost, you just wait until MS announce it as soon as they get the Windows 9 released. We don't know yet. Hopefully it's free upgrade for Windows 8.1.

Windows 7 is supported until 2020, but after next year, Windows 7 users will start losing out on newer technologies, as Microsoft focuses on bringing them to Windows 8.1 and Threshold users. At this point, I'd wait, as Threshold should be made available next year according to rumors.

 

Microsoft has yet to officially acknowledge the Threshold update, let alone put a price tag on it.

I think Windows 8.1 users have a high chance of getting 9 or whatever threshold turns out to be (probably 9), for free, maybe 8.0 users as well but I bet MS will have them upgrade to 8.1 first though that Windows Update process I remember reading about and not through the Windows Store.

 

As for Windows 7 users, if they want to get them as well, also Vista and any XP hold outs, they'll offer it for a very low price, $15 or $30 tops for a DVD copy mailed to you.  They did the same when Windows 8 first came out but it was limited, I bet this time it's going to be for longer if not forever at that low price.  You have to keep in mind that they plan to upgrade Windows faster going forward, not the 3 year cycle from before.  We should be in for more major updates every year now, with some minor GDR/Update 1/2 type stuff between which they do for WP.

 

That means they can charge every one less because they could be charging you to upgrade (at least from anything older than the newest version till then) more often.  So when Windows 10 comes out those on 9.1 or 9.2 could get it for free while those still on 8.1 or older will have to pay.  That's what I expect anyways, we'll see next year.
