Kicking off Gamescom 2014: More social features, new ways to watch TV, and USB and DLNA Support Coming Soon

UPDATE: Xbox Live?s AceyBongos and one of the lead engineers on Xbox, Ashley Speicher, demo some the new Xbox One features announced earlier today in this new video:

Ahead of our gamescom briefing live from Cologne, Germany at 2:00 p.m. CEST ? that?s 8:00 a.m. ET and 5:00 a.m. PT ? I?m excited to announce new and exciting features coming to Xbox One within the next few months.

We?ve been bringing tons of new features to Xbox One fans worldwide throughout the year. Thanks to the recently-launched Xbox Feedback, our fans have played a huge role in shaping these updates. In fact, we?ve received thousands of posts and more than 400,000 votes to date.

Starting in the early access program later this month, new social features making it easier for gamers to connect with their friends and new ways to access their TV and entertainment throughout their homes will be coming to Xbox One.  The updates include:

  • New ?Friends? section ? the new Friends section has been available for a few early access Preview members and we?re expanding it to everyone enrolled in the Preview program. The new Friends section enables users to see at a glance what?s going on with their friends. They can stay up-to-date with their current activities, the most popular games their friends are playing, and a Gamerscore leaderboard to see who has improved their Gamerscore over the last 30 days.
  • Snap Center ? Some of gamers? favorite features in the Xbox 360 guide, are coming to Xbox One in a way that?s now truly be side-by-side with games. Messages, friends, parties, and achievements will all be available in the new Snap Center, providing a seamless way to switch back and forth without having to leave a game.
  • Threaded Messages ? keeping gamers in their games while they multitask has been a huge focus. The new Messages app features threaded messages with the full conversation history ? including embedded links to Game DVR clips ? that can be viewed without interrupting gameplay.
  • Media Player ? a new app will be available soon that enables users to play media files from either an attached USB device or from a network connected home media server that supports DLNA protocols. The preview version of the Media Player app will initially only support USB devices, with DLNA support coming soon. Xbox One will support more formats than Xbox 360, including support for dozens of new file formats like mpeg 2 TS, animated gifs and mkv which will be added by the end of the year. See below for additional file formats.
  • Xbox One Digital TV Tuner ?announced last week, this new accessory will enter a limited preview program in Europe (UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain), in advance of its retail launch beginning in October.
  • Stream TV to SmartGlass ? launching first in markets receiving the Xbox Digital TV Tuner, Xbox One owners will be able to stream their TV across their home network to their smartphones and tablets using the Xbox SmartGlass app. They can also pause, play and rewind as well as change channels, without interrupting gameplay on the Xbox One. This will work for SmartGlass apps on Windows, iOS, and Android.
  • Boot to TV ? Now Xbox One owners will be able to set their console to boot directly to television when coming out of connected standby.
  • Live TV mini guide ? for markets where OneGuide is available, a new mini guide on the bottom of the screen will display details about the TV content that is currently playing. Users can quickly change channels and see what?s on other channels, while still watching TV.
  • Country Expansion ? we?re doing a lot of work on the backend to prepare for Xbox One to launch in 29 new markets

    in the coming weeks.

As with previous updates, these may be rolling out in general availability to Xbox One owners at different stages in the coming months. We continue to be amazed by our fans? enthusiasm for our Xbox One system updates and their fantastic input. We?re working hard to make Xbox One more social and the best place for all your games and entertainment, and we can?t wait to roll out these new features, and more, in the coming months.

Later today, my gamescom co-host Acey Bongos, and one of the lead engineers on Xbox, Ashley Speicher, are demoing the new features. Stay tuned and we?ll post that demo a little later.

My goodness, this is what I've been waiting for.  I ripped all of my personal DVD's to mkv files and have been playing them on my PS3.

I can finally migrate to the XBox One!!!!!

I hope so, but this is the feature I've been waiting for.  Anything else is icing on the cake.  :-)

I found a western digital external 1tb drive passport ultra.  Great little drive.  I think I paid $89 for it,  I found it online last week for $59 on sale.  later on i'll get another just for my xbox one and dvr.

It is, well, a specific x264 profile.

If it's just a profile it shouldn't be an issue. Profiles are essentially just settings for the various versions of the codec.

My only hope now is that they have some sort of "browser" built into the Player App that makes going through movie files a pleasant experience.

The PS3 does this VERY well, even allowing you to add a 10 second video thumbnail of each file, in addition to assigning categories and names.

Fantastic. I just bought an X1 this weekend, and I was missing these media features from the 360. I have a Synology NAS that I stream all my media to 360, so this will be nice to have.

Well, from the list they have h264 avchd and then mpeg 4 h264 aac, those both should be specific profiles for it, but who knows if it will play something that's a bit different from those 2?  I know the 360 was very specific about it's support of MPEG4 profitles.

Wow,  I missed the live event, but waking up to see this news is awesome!

I'm a heavy local media user, so to see MS bringing back a 360 feature and improving it greatly for the X1 is exactly the kind of improvement I was looking for. The whole released list sounds good, but this is something I have wanted since day 1.

I'm anxious to see the media support in action and the proper dlna usage. I also hope they are willing to expand format support as it goes along. Its windows underneath, so there is less keeping them from doing that. Now my main media related issue boils down to background audio support. Allow media apps to play in the background.

MS continues to impress with their aggressive software rollouts. They need to keep it up.

Agreed regarding the background media.  I'd love to play EA Golf (when it comes out) with my music library playing in the background.  :-)

...and imagine if this was a "snappable" feature, so we could change tracks/playlists on the fly.

For the people who bring up background music playing I bet they haven't added it to the player on the XB1 right yet because of this new media player that's coming out with all the new codec support and so on.  They'd have to be crazy not to allow background audio by then I mean hell, they're going to give us the ability to stream live TV to any smartglass device while the XB1 is playing a game so I think they can work out background audio without issue.

That's a codec, not a file type. I'm certain it will be supported given the file types listed.

x264 is not a Codec, it's an encoder.

h264 is the codec.

The 360 had lots of issues with h264 profiles just because of when it was made, and the hardware in it.

The Xbox One will likely support h264 all the way up to L4.1, which is the same as Blurays use, as well as most HD content.

I doubt it will support L5.1, which was widely used for HD encoding before hardware decoders on video cards became available.. Still used by some groups.. offers the best Picture/Size, but can exceed the ability of hardware devices to playback.

I also doubt it will support Hi10, which is 10bit encoding, which is becoming more popular, especially in Anime.

But most content you will see, it'll support. 99% of all stuff uses basic h264 L4.1 and less profiles, as it offers the widest compatibility.

I'm assumed it was a typo, since it doesn't make sense as a question if you're referring to the encoder, as it encodes h264 files.

Ignorance is the more common reason :)

People see x264 in the filenames of the movies/shows they download and just assume it's the codec :)

Hi10 support would be awesome. I happen to have a lot in that format. As you said, that is great for encoding Anime or Cartoons. I know its a long shot, but you never know.
