KB2982791 or KB2975719 (aug 2014) black screen after 2nd boot.

Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2975719)

that were released yesterday both give me nothing but a black screen after the second reboot after their install.

I have to system restore to get a bootable system again.

The flag shows up and the throbber then when the lock screen usually appears it just goes black, after 20 minutes no OS.

My system is an i7-4770, 750ti, 16gb ddr3, samsung 840 evo, so I'm used to my system booting in about 5 seconds.

This behaviour is repeatable always for me, it's taken me all afternoon (in between being ill :/ ) installing, booting twice to check, then booting more on fail to get to sys restore menu to narrow it down to just those two updates.
The first reboot after the install is fine, the next reboot gives a black screen dead system, no cursor.

Maybe it's the nvidia gtx 750ti with 340.52 whql driver, as it just flicks to black when the display normally kicks in, but I don't want to lose any more time tonight downgrading that and doing more update installs/sys restores.

win 8.1 x64 pro with media centre.

Well, exactly the same thing happened to me!

I too have Win 8.1 Pro x64 MediaCenter... and it took me 8 hours to narrow down the non-working updates: KB2982791 and KB2975719.

Could that be that the MediaCenter version is not compatible with these two updates?!

I'm having the same problem, and just found this thread; I registered just so I can post here. I also narrowed it down to KB 2982791 to be the one causing the problem.

Any ideas on what is the root cause?

Exactly the same Problem here. It also took me a few hours to track it to those 2 updates.

If anyone gets a solution, please post it!

There's also a thread on the Microsoft support site:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_update/win-81-august-12-updates-black-screen-after-2nd/ff06e4d3-2fed-44bb-b07a-e0f3f351eaa1

Go there and post or hit the "me too" hyperlink. The more people reporting the issue the more likely it is to get attention.

Yeah, I started that too, I should have linked it :)

Just to inform you all. The team in Microsoft that provides these updates has been notified about this issue and they are investigating.

Thanks,

A cure has been found in the thread! For anyone that wants to update before MS fix this officially:
(can't link specific posts so here's a quote from my post on page7
 http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_update/win-81-august-12-updates-black-screen-after-2nd/ff06e4d3-2fed-44bb-b07a-e0f3f351eaa1?page=7&tm=1408130606221

Cool!! After restoring my pc to the pre-patch state, i was able to install these succesfully by taking the following steps:
1. Reboot into safe mode with command prompt
2. Delete fntcache.dat from c:\windows\system32
3. Reboot back to windows 8.1. The fntcache.dat file is auto-recreated.
4. Install the two famous updates and pray
I believe the theory expressed above about some older font cache format may be correct, and probably microsoft didnt test compatibility with it... So only when you have a 'freshly created' fontcache right before the patch it works correctly...

This worked for me.
I didn't delete the file, I just renamed it .dat-bak.  I typed exit, and got stuck at a black screen again, I left it 5 min to be sure, should be a lot longer than needed to rebuild a font cache on this PC. Gave up and hit reset.

Next boot went ok, checked the files. and the new fontcache.dat differed by the first 4 bytes only.

Rebooted again all still ok.

Installed the two offending windows updates, rebooted, all ok, rebooted again all ok (though it does take about 1 second longer than before the patches, there's about a 1 second pause on black before the lock screen comes in).

comparing the post update fntcache.dat to the rebuilt version before installing the updates:

4998892 same byte(s)
218 left orphan byte(s)
218 right orphan byte(s)
29666 difference byte(s)

with differences throughout the file, so it's clearly changed format.

Several test reboots later still no black screen hanging.

Many thanks!

  • 5 weeks later...

SIMPLE FIX!!!!!

step 1. Shutdown computer.

step 2. Power on computer then wait until the windows 8 boot loader appears

then immediately press and hold the power button until the screen goes blank. (what you were told

not to do)

step 3. power on your computer. you should see "Starting automatic repair" on the bootloader screen.

step 4. the repair should fail and when it does, press advanced options. if it doesn't fail then repeat steps 1-3

step 5. choose advanced options again.

step 6. choose system restore.

step 7. click your username and enter your password if prompted

step 8. in the system restore screen chose "show more restore points"

step 9. choose the restore point closest to the date that your computer still worked.

step 10. confirm the restore

step 11. this will take a while so go make a cup of tea (or other beverage) while you wait

step 12. reboot computer.

step 13. computer should boot normally into the lock screen. after that. log in.

step 14. go to control panel. not settings. control panel. then go to programs and features > veiw installed updates

step 15. find KB2982791 in the list and uninstall it.

step 16. reboot computer.

This worked for me. hope it helped.
