Playstation Share coming with FW 2.0

Recommended Posts

This was mentioned in the PS4 reveal Feb 2013.  Being able to play your friend's games on your own console online.  It acts like a P2P Playstation Now.  You basically take over your friend's console from your own.

This is different than Far Cry 4, where you can jump in and co-op online even if you don't own the game.

But when is this 2.0 firmware coming out?

All they've said is "Fall".  I guess that's better than Second Half or Winter though.

Ok, so a bit more clarity has been released regarding the details of the feature:

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps4s-upcoming-game-sharing-feature-limits-you-to-6/1100-6421730/

That article is a couple days old, but it hadn't been mentioned yet, so I thought I would share it.

So basically, you can allow a friend to play an entire game that you own, but you have re authorize that game every hour and of course you cannot use the ps4 for anything else while this is happening. I would say that one hour 'check-in' is a good way to try and limit too much abuse of the system, a sort of drm-lite. Its too bad you can't do anything else with the ps4 during this though, but again, I see that as a way to limit abuse.

The whole point of the program is a glorified demo system. Sony won't force developers to provide demos, so instead they created a system mechanism that allows anyone that owns a game to demo it out to anyone else.

One thing that is not clear is how saves work. On the original Kotaku story listed in this thread, there was an update to the article that stated that since the remote user is basically taking over your local ps4, any game saves are tied to your account, not to that remote user. Then, the more recent article above states that saves are in fact tied to the remote users account. I wonder which it is.

I'm okay with that, it is suppose to be shareplay, not turn your PS4 on and go away on holiday for the weekend whilst your friends play your games.

For that there's still the two account activations if you only have one PS4 and are happy with a friend having their PS4 registered with your second account token.

I guess this can work out. 1hr check-ins negates the thought of abuse.

But what in really wondering about is the smoothness of gameplay. Because this is only going to be as good as your internet connection.

I wouldn't want to play a game like Rayman Legends, or an FPS, with a 3 down and 1.5up connection (and up being the more important speed here in this situation). Wouldn't be a smooth experience IMHO...

I see it as a way to keep your CPU from blowing up.  The game is still being rendered on your console while your friend is playing it.

Hakoom is going to make a mint getting people trophies over SharePlay.

Sure it is, but the console is built with some multitasking in mind. It sounds like you can't even say jump into another app and use it will the streaming is taking place. I could understand if the act of streaming puts more stress on the console then it can handle while still allowing multitasking, but that hasn't been revealed yet.

I really don't get the point of the one hour limit. As I understand it there is no Sony servers involved here so Sony doesn't need to limit resource use. If you want to load up The Last of Us or something then pass control of your PS4 to your remote friend for the weekend what does Sony care? That means you can't use your PS4, you're sucking down your bandwidth streaming the game video to your friend (which is probably 720p instead of 1080p), and your friend is stuck playing just that one game of yours with saves that are on your profile. That seems like enough to limit abuse already without having to cap it at an hour. If your friend wants to actually have the trophies on their profile, play whenever they want, etc. they still need to buy the game. I'm not saying I think the feature is bad, it's still pretty cool and I don't think the competition even offers that much but the hour limit just seems arbitrary and unnecessary to me.

The console's firmware isn't built for that, like X1.  Yeah, it'll record or download in background, etc., but you can't watch Netflix while playing a game while browsing etc.  It's not the act of streaming, it's the act of rendering the game.

That's true. You can't watch netflix while a game is running normally anyway, so that makes sense.

So its a limited demo replacement. I hope this doesn't lead to fewer developers making the effort to create a standard demo.

Because it's based around both of you playing together, even if its a SP game you can still spectate your friend playing. It is a form of DRM-lite, they want your friend to be there (the one that owns the game). It's probably the best we're going to see from digital sharing, sure with discs you can just give your friend the game, but publishers and developers are never going to sign onto this kind of sharing without some sort of clause.

At least at the end of the hour you can just reauthorize and you can do that as many times as you want - Putting a limit on that would be crappy DRM. This is a fair compromise.

I get that it's a form of DRM-lite.  I'm just saying it seems unnecessary because the fact your friend is tying up your PS4 so you can't use it, sucking down your bandwidth with the game stream, playing a likely lower res/higher latency version, earning trophies on your profile instead of theirs, etc. already seem to provide more than enough DRM-lite that tacking on an hour limit seems arbitrary and unnecessary.  Even without the hour limit it doesn't seem like a viable option to just leave your PS4 hosting a game for a friend over the weekend.

If you play a co-op game you're playing together?

Letting your friend take over SP is probably more a case of getting help with something you're stuck at.

Since the saves are tied to the player at the console, it sounds like there is no second save created.

So its not like you can let a friend start his own new game. They will always be plying on your saves.

The more I think about, the more I realize this is aimed more at letting a remote player help you out than allow someone to demo a game.

That's how it has been marketed from the start (and I mean Feb 2013 unveil, not just GC'14 news).

Gamers naturally see the cheap game sharing perspective as the main selling point though :p

The time limit is arbitrary, most likely just to keep the publishers happy. It's hardly a huge inconvenience worth whining about though

Yeah,  I am sure people can play the other 100 games they no doubt have in their pile of shame.
