Don't Expect to See Too Many More PS4 HD Remasters of PS3 Games

"You can't have too many of these things otherwise next-gen just looks like rehashed last-gen and we certainly don't want that," Sony says.

The Last of Us Remastered is already a best-selling game on PSN and at the top of the July NPD top 10 games sales list, but don't expect to see too many more PlayStation 4 HD remasters of PlayStation 3 games.

"You can't have too many of these things otherwise next-gen just looks like rehashed last-gen and we certainly don't want that," PlayStation Europe executive Jim Ryan told CVG in an interview. "I think the balance is just about right but you know, there are other games that could be looked at, but there'll come a point where next gen will have moved on and rehashing old-gen will have passed its sell-by date."

Ryan explained that bringing a game like The Last of US to PS4 made a lot of sense because it earned great reviews and came out near the launch of the PS4. For the people who transitioned to a PS4 from a competing platform last generation, it was also the first opportunity to play it. Ryan said that Sony will look at bringing other PS3 games to PS4 when it "makes sense."

At Gamescom 2014, Sony also announced that it's bringing Journey and The Unfinished Swan to PS4 and that they'll both run at 1080p.

Good.

Okay at the start some quick cheap ports can bring in money and bolster the library, for example The Last of Us is truly worth it for 60FPS.

But for the rest of the games Sony just need to fix that PS3 DS4 support (rumble is broke) and people can just use the superior controller on their PS3s.

Well thank goodness they are saying this.

I can appreciate how tempting it is to spend resources releasing the same game on a new system, with either no updates (straight port), minimal updates (upscale), or significant updates (remaster).

I'm not really 'mad' that this is happening across all platforms since gamers are buying this kind of stuff, which will naturally encourage Sony and others to keep doing it. I just don't want to get the impression that a platform seems to be heavily relying on re-releases to bolster its library. Right now, early in this gen, these releases feel that way. The Last of US and the Halo MCC are prime examples of remakes being used to bolster a small library of titles.

Not that I dislike either title, in fact those are both games I will buy (the Last of US will be bought a little later since I see little value in paying full price for a game I paid full price for not long ago and completed). I'm all for these types of releases to keep happening, just don't let them dominate the game lineup.

Yea I can see a small handful of remakes for their best sellers mayyyybe.. but personally if I were to buy a new console the last thing I'd be likely to buy is the same stuff that I already have. Impress me with new titles, no rehash the same-old. Too many of those would put some people off and get them thinking "what's the point?"

I think there are some games that are absolutely worth it, and has the added bonus of padding out a pretty slow year for new games. I mean The Last of Us on PS4 is amazing and is one of those games I love having in my games library, and will revisit over the life of the PS4.  There aren't many games that really deserve rereleasing though.

It looks like Metro Redux is worth it however.  For 2033 in particular it looks like such a rebuilding of the core game it is befitting of 'Next Gen' . Given I only played a bit of 2033 and none of Last Light I am quite looking forward to it.  I don't want to see to many more rereleases though.

In the whole, a good idea but there are some games i want to appear on the new gen machines. I'm being picky because to be fair i could grab most of them on PC but i like having a quickly accessible library of games on those little (well...) black boxes under my TV.

The other way to look at it is a lot of teams use their most recent project to get to grips with and learn the new hardware. Hence why we see a lot of these ports during the first few years but as time goes on they dry up. Unless we're talking about reviving an IP then you might see collections (Hitman, MGS etc) on the ramp up to new releases.

The thing is I dont want to have to get my PS3 or PS2 out of the box every time i want to play an old game, so im fine with re-masters, but im not ok with it if it comes at the cost of new content.

Personally I think most of these HD remakes are a huge rip off. All they do is upscale and remove jaggies. Nothing is re-textured. I was extremely disappointed in the HD remake of FFX/X-2 and God of War Remakes. I could see if they were going to sell these at say $30 but you know they gonna put a $60 price tag on it when they can.

They shouldn't be making them, you being lazy should not be a factor

I don't care the two ps3 games i wanted to play are remastered (The Last of Us and Journey). It's great i'll actually buy a PS4 for that cause none of the so called "next gen" titles on both consoles impress me so far.

This is good news, also am I the only person that thought the last of us was boring and wouldn't dare okay it again?

I'm sure someone will freak out that they aren't re-mastering all of the classics. Sony seems to have done a good job on confining the remasters to a couple of games. Last of Us deserved it. I would like to see new life breathed into old franchises but that will come soon enough I'm sure. And LaP is right, most of the next gen console games have been lame so far. I've only really enjoyed Dead Rising so far. Personally, while I'd like to see Last of Us on the PS4, i'm not sure it's worth it since I've got it on the PS3.

I would quite like to see Beyond Two Souls on PS4.  It was a good looking game on PS3 and would be really interested to see what they can do with PS4.  I know it got pretty odd reviews but for what it was I thought it was a really good 'experience' (can't really call it a game).

Were people expecting to see a bunch more of these? I don't think anything pointed to that being the case. It makes sense for some games that come out right around the time the new consoles come out, and then for a handful of other games, but it's not like HD remasters has become the thing to do all of a sudden.

Personally expected a fair few in the first 12-18 months. Some of the gaming community whinged like it would be all that is released on the new consoles though.

I've been holding back on buying it for that reason too. It's been rumoured a few times IIRC.

That and it's bound to be added to PS+ too
