"Microsoft’s Windows Store is a mess. It’s full of apps that exist only to scam people and take their money. Why doesn’t Microsoft care that their flagship app store is such a cesspool?

It’s now been more than two years since Windows 8 was released, and this has been a problem the entire time, and it is getting worse. If Microsoft was trying to offer a safe app store to Windows users, they’ve failed.
The Store is Full of Scams, And They’re Easy to Find

This problem isn’t a secret. Search the Windows Store for any popular app and you’ll see all kinds of junk. For example, here’s what happens when we search for VLC in the Windows Store:"

Personally this is why I typically don't use Modern apps aside from stuff I put together myself and a couple of well knowns, no random browsing... I know where the "regular" software is coming from. Still need to use common sense on other stores too but, sheesh, that's pretty bad. I like the concept, but the execution needs a lot of work yet.

Never bothered with the winodws store for this exact reason. way worse than when WP came out. but then I only use a handful of x86 applications.

I'd be really ###### of if I was a Window RT user, which I almost became if there was a free app that could read mkv's and decode DTS audio files.

This happens in Android store as well... You just need to know from trusted reviews and source.

i stick to 'traditional way' of buying software, directly from their developer and not some 3rd party store like windows store.

The 8.1 upgrade is the only legitimate software available in the Windows store.

Yes. This is one of the major problems with Windows 8.

Microsoft does NOT, in any form, enforce ANY standards for "applications" in its store. I am pretty sure the only way to take down a scam application to sue them.
Almost nothing remotely of quality of an "Application".

The store mostly consists of,
1. Scams
2. *Real Application Name Here* Guide
3. Trashware / Made in a week ****
4. Pay to Win "Free" Games

Seriously, Open your Steam Library and Open the Windows Store games page.
Notice that one has games.

If true, then Microsoft's own software in the Windows Store isn't legitimate.

Well, you could just PM me. I'm legitimately curious. I wish Neowin had a directory to highlight apps developed by Neowin members.

Pretty easy for you to find mine since two are in my signature. 17 for Windows Phone and 12 for Windows 8.

Plenty of legitimate apps in the Windows Store. But as with anything, read the reviews first.
