How reliable is the Xbox One?

74 posts in this topic

Hey guys!

I'm planning to pick an Xbox One from Australia as it will work out nearly $250 cheaper than what is available in India (We have ###### pricing)

My only concern is that is the console reliable? I have heard about:

1)E100 and 2) Disc Drive problems.

Apparently a lot of folks at /r/XboxOne are also having problems with getting their discs read after the August update.

I know that no electronic is 100% reliable, my own luck matters and that warranty will be only for a year but I'm a little skeptic about Xbox One (Thanks to the whole 360 fiasco)

My other option is then to pick Ps4 which I think has reliable hardware comparatively.

Eventually I know that I'm going to end up with both but right now I need to figure out which one to pick first.

Any help will really be appreciated.

Thx

I buy all my games digitally so I can't comment on the blu ray drive, but everything else is fine.

I checked the top 50 on reddit and didnt see any posts regarding Drive problems or E100 errors.  I remember very early on there were some people having issues with the drive but that was around launch.  Havent heard much after that.  I've got a launch console and have never had any issues before or after and updates.  Im in the preview program and luckily have not had any major bugs effect my daily use.  If you are already skeptical then why not just pick up the PS4 since you are going to get both anyway

it's pretty reliable. doesn't even get hot. gets warm though, but no where close to hot. it's quiet. I usually have mine on for at least half a day at a time.

playing games, watching videos, browsing, talking to friends. etc. no problems.

Well,    360 was a nightmare.  the quality control was terrible (i know a person who worked in MS quality control on manufacturing XBoxes)

There is no way, Xbox One is anywhere near as bad.    I am pretty certain they took care of such issues, as they lost a lot of money and goodwill with 360 replacements!

So I think you will be OK with it, just as well as PS4.  So go for it.

PS.

funny how someone is buying from australia because it is cheaper....  all i have seen so far, is that aussies have to pay so much more then usa that it is not even funny.

I've had no issues with mine whatsoever. I use some disc games and some downloaded games, as well as lots of Netflix, etc. No problems.

As ironic it may sound, Ps4 is $100 more expensive than Xbox One in Australia.

Being unemployed, I'm trying to save wherever I can till I don't get a job. Add to the fact that, Xbox One has better games including exclusives coming out this year than PS4.

Some recent reddit threads:

I appreciate everyone trying their best to help me and for the vote of confidence :)

True! I feel US is the cheapest along with HK to buy electronics.

In India both Xbox One without Kinect and Ps4 are costing approx $670

Get an Xbox One for sure then.     I owned both, but return them, as there were no games to play yet (and I could return and get money back within 30 days, which i did, after fooling around with them)

Both systems are about the same.  If you like the xbox one exclusives coming up, definately get it!  Not worth paying $100 extra for PS4.

From my experience its only locked up on me once i had to pull the power out and back in and all was fine but mine is on 24/7 just about and i do games/bluray movies/tv/netflix ect on it.  Also I have never heard the thing cept for a few seconds sometimes when i initially load a bluray and i can have it inside my entertainment center and it never gets hot.

My ps4 has never locked up on me yet though i do not use it to much.  When playing games my ps4 it sounds like a jet taking off and doesnt stop till i turn the whole thing off and even then it goes on for like 5-10 minutes cause the fans still spin to keep cooling it down.  Also I CANNOT have it near my satellite receiver or inside the shelf because it blows heat out of the back like nobody's business and my satellite overheats and locks up because of it.  Which the noise is a big thing for me cause i have a toddler and that fan spinning noise is to loud to play in the living room after bed time lol so i have to stick to my xbox and headphones

Mine is running perfectly fine since day one, about 6-7 hours per day (it's also our media center). I'm using the optical drive for movies 4-8 hours per week - never had a problem. Gaming session of 2 hours without a problem.

Sometimes I need to reconnect the external drive as it fails to recognize, but that's about it (most likely a problem with my drive/cable).

You could be one of the unlucky who'll get a faulty unit, but genrally speaking it's a reliable machine.

I have no issues besides my kinect died and needs to be replaced but the console itself. I have about half my games on disk and the drive works perfectly for me.

There is an reason why the Xbox One is bigger than PS4. They don't want the same overheating issue with Xbox 360 had.

Mine's been rock solid so far aside from some HDMI handshake annoyances, but it's going through a receiver in pass through mode. HDMI is flaky regardless.

I've had the same experience with mine.

It does get maddening sometimes. I even upgraded all of the HDMI cables - now I get a error message from the Pioneer stating the device isn't ready yet. Then it will kick over to live tv finally.

Since I had my console replaced I've not had any issues. Bought a day one and had problems with the disc drive, issue was only with the first batch of consoles.

One last question: Is it worth picking a Kinect? I have no idea when they will support voice commands in my country. I'm wondering because it will cost me $40 extra to get it.

Unless you've enjoyed Kinect in the past I would suggest you skip it. $40 could go towards a game instead.

Why are you buying from Australia?

Unless its a second hand Xbox One from ebay for cheap you can get it for much cheaper elsewhere. I live in Australia and wanted to get a PS4 in the US while I was on a business trip but it was sold out, so I eventually bought one back in Australia for $100 more than what it costs in the US. Not sure why you would buy the Xbox One from Australia when its RRP is also $100 more than places like the US.

As for the reliability of the Xbox One, its seems to have been built much better than the X360's and their failure rates are very low. If you do get a faulty one you will notice fairly quickly and will be able to return for warranty claim and get a working one. One of the mods made some posts about his Xbox One warranty claims on these forums not too long ago (He got like 3 bad Xbox One's in a row, until he got a good one) but that was during the launch period and that was just extremely unlucky.I don't think you'll have an issue with buying one now.
