Sikh
I'm looking for a new laptop that will be my full-time Linux desktop machine. It will be used in the living for causal use but I'll also be using it for development. My requirements for a machine are - light - quality build - GOOD screen (resolution and quality matters) - disk drive is not necessary I'm basically looking for a ultrabook / ultra portable laptop. Price isn't an issue because I'm going to buy the best rexommended machine to me after doing research. I haven't kept up with laptops in a year or so and I know the PC space has changed a lot as far as ultrabooks / portables go. All suggestions are welcomed. Really want a computer I can keep for a long time not a plastic piece of ###### that weighs 5 pounds and looks like ass screen quality wise. Thanks all Sikh
sc302 Veteran Posted August 20, 2014 Veteran Share Posted August 20, 2014 ultrabooks don't have the best screens, they are good not great. this may have changed with newer generations. The acer s7 is probably the best that I have seen in an ultrabook. I like the acer s7's and lenovo x1 carbons. They come in many processor variants with different memory variants too. You will not be able to upgrade what is in there as they are sealed units. http://www.techradar.com/us/news/mobile-computing/laptops/best-ultrabook-18-top-thin-and-lights-1054355

tsupersonic
IMO, the two best portable laptops out there are the Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 and Macbook Pro. satysin, Sikh and offroadaaron 3 Share
Astra.Xtreme
We should first ask if you're okay with a 13-14" screen. Almost all Ultrabooks have small screens. You can find ones with nice high res displays (Lenovo Carbon & Asus Zenbook), but you'll be stuck with the small screen. Granted that's just about the only way to get under 5 lbs. Sikh
You don't mention the SIZE which is the most important part for making recommendation. also you don't mention is you want to game at all Because im not concerned about size. Im more concerned about resolution then size. I mention linux, so if I wanted to game at all, any game that runs on linux will run on any laptop recommended. Its not the only way to get under 5 pounds. The 15" retina macbook pro is 4 1/2 pounds i believe. Im spoiled because of it so im asking for a laptop with a weight thats the same or below. Im ok with any screen size IMO, the two best portable laptops out there are the Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 and Macbook Pro. Thanks for the lenovo suggestion, was thinking about it and the carbon. I agree about the macbook pro. I have a Retina and love it. Its the reason im asking for a laptop under 5 pounds. Im spoiled because of its build and weight. payturr
I have a Retina and love it. Its the reason im asking for a laptop under 5 pounds. Im spoiled because of its build and weight. The 15" weighs 4.46 pounds, and the 13" 3.46 pounds. Under 3 pounds you mean?
Sikh
The 15" weighs 4.46 pounds, and the 13" 3.46 pounds. Under 3 pounds you mean? No I had the 15" which is why I said 4 1/2 lbs. So 4.46 is closer to 4.5 @Everyone: Im seirously considering the X1 Carbon or Thinkpad 240. Lenovo has done a extremely good job. Im also glad they dont make you buy a touchscreen screen to get "FHD" resolution. Still keep the recommendations coming. Im looking to buy soon but I might just wait till black friday. T3X4S
The thing is, the higher rez ultrabooks are a premium price, and then you're throwing Linux on it.... ewwwww j/kI have the X1 Carbon - the only bad part is the touchpad, but I always use a mouse - so I have to say its perfect. Sikh
Thanks for the input everyone. I ended up picking up a laptop yesterday and its working like I wanted to you. Very minimal config. Just configuring to get workspaces, etc set up. Have multiple SD cards all set up to boot different distros and its working really well. In the end it was down to the x1 carbon and the computer I got. In the end the computer I got was a MUCH better value then the x1 carbon which I was surprised but I was sold. Again thanks for your help. I'll be following the carbon and one day I might just pick one up because of the great job lenovo has done with design internally and externally.
