cbrookhart
I recently purchased a video card from newegg at a cost of $289.99. The video card (Sapphire Radeon R9-280X) came with a promotion for three free games, but the promotion has a $0.99 charge on the newegg website. The way the order was invoiced is as follows: Discount for add-on - $ 0.99 Sapphire R9-280X $289.99 Subtotal $289.00 Shipping $ 5.67 Grand Total $294.67 I see that charge on credit card statement, and there are no concerns with that. There is also a second charge from Newegg in the amount of $1. Newegg has not been able to explain this, and I think that they think I am questioning about how I was charged for the promotional items. When I checked out, there was a prompt from Google about free protection. I elected to accept the offer from Google. There's only a few things I can conclude about this $1 charge. 1) It's a card verification charge that will be removed 2) The game promotion was rounded to $1 3) Google sees Newegg as a trusted store and perhaps the free protection incurred a $1 charge I've never shopped at newegg before, so this is my first experience with free order add-ons that come in the form of a digital delivery and have a $0.99 charge that is taken off later. Max Norris
I've purchased from NewEgg a fair number of times but don't recall ever seeing a $1 charge. (I could be wrong, it's been a while.) But a $1 "verification charge" is somewhat common, lots of places do that and it does eventually drop off again, used when you use a new card with them. Reasonably sure Google's one of those that do. neufuse Veteran Posted August 20, 2014 Veteran Share Posted August 20, 2014 the $1 charge is a pending charge which will fall off and not go to charged status, which is for authorization checks on a card... it will disappear in a few days, LOTS of retailers do this pre-authorization check

cbrookhart
I figured that it was a verification charge, but it just wasn't clear exactly where it was coming from since it showed up as originating from Newegg. Maybe it was from Newegg on behalf of Google. I guess I shouldn't have worried about it unless it actually remained on the statement after a few days.
