Toyota's New Cars Will Have a Nexus 7 Built Right Into the Dashboard

Having a 7-inch tablet slotted into your car's dashboard just makes so much sense. It would be an elegant solution to craptastic GPS systems and clunky entertainment options. Toyota thinks so too. Its latest cars in Taiwan come with a Nexus 7 built right in.

Toyota partnered with Asus-owned Unimax to create something known as the Toyota Intelligent System (TIS), which is essentially a regular Nexus 7 tablet customized with voice-recognition, multimedia offering, a 4G connection and all the Google Maps goodness that comes with it.

The best part about the system is that over time, as better tablets come along, you can quickly swap in different models and be up-to-date.
No word on which cars will come with the Nexus yet. We just have to wait.

I'd rather stick to OEM solutions that can bridge with a mobile device. I don't want to have to upgrade my car every few years to replace an insecure, slow, outdated tablet. I'll skip that option.

Um, I think you missed this very important piece:

Nope, you apparently missed my post completely.... that's exactly what I'd said. But I'd rather not have to keep upgrading/spending money to buy a new tablet to keep my car functioning normally.

And OEM car systems don;t go out of date? Of course they do. This is a far better system for staying up to date.

The way you worded it said you would replace cars to replace a slow outdated tablet, when in fact you can just drop in a new tablet (which typically run for <$400-500). Take for example my car, the iDrive system is already outdated despite owning my car for only a year and 3 months. It would cost me thousands (just in parts alone) to replace the system, and that doesn't even factor in labor costs. These swaps can be done, but I don't have the expertise or time to do it. Now take this approach by Toyota, and I could've bought a new Nexus 7 or similar device for less than $300.

My 5 year old touch screen radio works perfectly fine... fast and able to bridge with my iPhone 5s and S4. I'm able to download new content for maps and weather via the app the radio uses on my phones. Much better to replace my phone every two years than a integral part of my car.

What car do you have?

I don't see why they would waste time on something that like that vs making it easier to mount/connect devices we already own.

that's what they are doing..sort of. The tablet can be exchanged for a newer one and this solution is more elegant, up-to-date and customizable then any solution out there.

Reminds me of Smart TVs

As long as it's optional. I don't want Google trackware in my vehicle.

If you already have a Android phone then you already have Google in your pants..

Nope, we'll have none of that! I had a Galagxy but got rid of it a while ago.

Can you remove this nexus tablet and plug in a wintab instead?

i don't think so.. It's a partnership between Toyota and Unimax, so maybe just Android tablets are possible, at least in the beginning. Also the UI must be different then the stock Android because you cant go throw menus just to answer a call.

What is Unimax? Isn't that a prison?
