Xbox One vs. PS4 vs. Wii U

http://wallstcheatsheet.com/technology/xbox-one-vs-ps4-vs-wii-u-sony-and-nintendo-keep-strong.html/?a=viewall

This generation?s console war has been in full swing for almost nine months, and the trajectory seemed clear from early on: Sony?s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft?s Xbox One were clobbering Nintendo?s Wii U just about every month. But lately, the tides have started to turn. We now have July?s sales numbers, and the shifting pattern seems to be continuing, which means things are getting more and more interesting.

The total console sales for July are as follows: The Xbox One sold 286,534 units, the Wii U sold 302,076, and the PS4 sold 671,269. Taken together with the last two months? sales, it?s clear that the Wii U is coming back strong against the Xbox One. However, the PS4 continues to look pretty unstoppable.

On the software side of things, the 3DS remains king among the current generation of hardware, selling just over 4 million games in July. The PS4 comes in second, with about 2 million in software sales, followed by the Xbox One at a distant 10th, with 730,511 game sales. The PS3 and Xbox 360 also moved a lot of games, selling 4 million and 3 million, respectively

The Wii U is showing a lot of fight for a console many had written off just a few months ago. It beat the Xbox One in July by about 15,000 units and remains ahead of it in total sales by nearly 2 million

To give a brief run down on what is happening sales wise, The PS4 remains unstoppable with a huge lead in regards to console sales, Xbox One was doing well initially but it is currently being beat by the Wii U.

I expected this news from some other member. But none the less, some fascinating, yet totally obvious facts.

I wasn't aware that the Wii U was outselling the Xbox One on a month to month basis until I read this, I actually thought the Xbox One was doing well and was on its way to overtake the Wii U sales. But I was aware the PS4 was well ahead of both.

So not totally obvious facts to me at-least, maybe others also.

ITT: People using VGChartz as source.

True, they have been known to underestimate PS4 data which they say is 9.4 million sales whilst Sony confirmed some time ago that over 10 million units have been sold.

They usually estimate data until they have real data and then correct their previous guesstimates on site.

http://www.cinemablend.com/games/PS4-Wins-July-Wii-U-Up-60-Over-2013-Xbox-One-Sales-Data-Still-MIA-66756.html

As for the Wii U, Nintendo confirmed Wii U sales are up 60 percent compared to the same period last year. So if you put that together with the diminishing Xbox One sales then the Wii U would be in the lead. Obviously if Microsoft had a surge of sales also then this would be a mute point but they usually make an announcement when they have good sales so I think its safe to say the Wii U is currently leading.

According to your own "source" (the latter), the Xbox One is outselling the Wii U.

VGChartz is unreliable and so is anyone using them as source for sales numbers.

In the US, original article is global sales.

Are we saying this because the data presented on VGChartz is actually unreliable, or are we saying this because it doesn't paint a good picture of the console we're tied to?

The global sales data is two weeks old, but what VG is reporting is in line with what's been officially reported.

PS4:

Sony: 10mil (8/19/14)

VG: 9.4mil (8/9/10)

Wii U:

Nintendo: 6.68mil (6/30/14)

VG: 6.9mil (8/9/14)

XBO:

MS: 5mil (8/19/14)

VG: 5.1mil (8/9/14)

3DS:

Nintendo: 44.14mil (6/30/14)

VG: 44.3mil (8/8/14)

Vita: Have to look that up later

Yep. People attack Vgchartz because they don't like what's being reported, period. All the MS crowd on this site is attack the source whenever the news is negative.

This is true but the sad thing is that vgchartz always buffs Xbox One sales numbers and underestimates PS4 sales most of the time, so it actually paints a better picture for Xbox One sales wise than is actually true until they get real sales data and then re-adjust their estimates.

It is a shame as the X1 is a good console but it isn't really any better than the PS4, at least not to the majority of gamers it seems. The 360 was better than the PS3 when it comes to FPS/Action games (IMHO) mostly due to the controller. With the improvements Sony made with the DS4 (Dual Shock 4) things are pretty balanced now with perhaps even the PS4 better better than the X1 controller as the analogue sticks are pretty damn amazing on the DS4. Combine that with the better visuals on the PS4 and the only reason to stick to Xbox is for the exclusives of which there is only really Halo and Forza to be honest. PlayStation has many more (and better IMHO) exclusives. Titanfall was supposed to be incredible but it turned out to be pretty meh.

The Wii U has and always will be an outsider as Nintendo just don't care about third party games as system sellers and they don't really have to as their first party games are simply incredible. Mario, Smash Bros, Zelda, Kart, etc. will always sell well and they have enough amazing IP to keep people interested in buy their consoles but those exclusives.

In short Microsoft really bet on the wrong horse this generation thinking they could get away with a less powerful machine than Sony with some gimicky features like the Kinect. Nintendo managed to pull it off with the Wii but that was mostly because it was a very reasonable price at launch. The X1 not so much ;)

Titanfall would have been so much better if it had a single player campaign and a story that people actually cared about. The multiplayer is great, but I just didn't get "into" the game.

Yeah the the lack of single player campaign was poor but also it just isn't all that much better on the X1 over the 360. Even if you play the two side by side the 360 version still plays really well. Kind of made the X1 look not that much better than the 360 IMHO.

Nintendo do have some great first party games, Super Smash Bro's is still one of my favorites.. Mario Cart also.

Everything more recent reiterates that post, so unless something's changed since (this includes things from 2011 and 2012) I would say it's still the case.

Regardless, it seems that VGChartz adjusts their numbers to match NPD numbers if they are inaccurate. Which means their numbers are from... where? Comparing them to existing numbers and seeing a correlation could just mean they've already adjusted them to the newly released numbers. If that's the case, then VGChartz is not a reliable source, because at any given moment they could be complete inaccurate numbers.

2010 - http://www.examiner.com/article/why-vgchartz-isn-t-considered-reliable

2014 -

Regardless of where it leans, it's unreliable.

Yep, just drive by posting. Still waiting for the contradictory numbers...

Yes, lets just chock it up to fanboyism and call it a day. Lets ignore the opinion of the entire internet gaming community about VGChartz that's been around since the start of last generation and continues to prove itself constant.

They. Are. Unreliable.

Show me the real numbers then.

And Sony fans attack them the same way when the numbers aren't favorable to Sony, but that's besides the point. The numbers aren't released by anyone but MS or Sony so that in itself should tell you anyone else purporting to know is unreliable.

The WiiU has been out for a year longer so their meager 1.8 mil lead shouldn't be celebrated so much. Xbox One is selling faster it's first year and will sell faster it's second, especially with Halo, among others coming out this fall. It's not really even a question that they'll fall behind eventually. And the PS4 is selling great, we all know that. Really not sure what the point of this article is. Both consoles are still selling faster than their predecessors.

Actually it does matter, even the video you posted says they over-estimate Xbox One sales.. hell they though Xbox One sold 100k more units than it actually sold in whatever time period that video is talking about. It also says its the best thing we have (to get recent sales data estimates).

Wii U is actually beating the Xbox One in monthly sales not just overall sales. There is no question it has actually fallen behind. But with that being said Nintendo did release some fan favorites recently which would account for the spike in Wii U sales.

So... we should just accept bad numbers because it's "the best thing we have" rather than being patient and getting numbers directly from the companies themselves, or from NPD?
