Girl, 9, kills Arizona shooting instructor with Uzi in accident

So, can -anyone- think of any sane reason why this apparently qualified instructor allowed a 9 year old to handle a loaded, fully automatic, machine pistol?

I thought these people were supposed to be professionally trained?!

its horrible that a child will have to deal with that sort of guilt for the rest of their life. While i do not understand or agree with why the child was in the situation to begin with i think that there is a lot of responsibility on the parents as well. but i feel more for the child and the emotional and psychological issues that are going to come from it more than anything else.

Other than common sense.

Do they vote?

Do they drive?

Do they operate site machinery?

No, all common sense.  But weapons, sure go right ahead.  IT'S OUR RIGHTS! #Whatever

Sure, have your little nonsense gun laws, I'm not even gonna go down the same tired argument... But come on, giving a kid a deadly (case in point) weapon is ridiculous.  Make an age limit as per other common sense laws.

I don't see any problem with teaching your kids how to use guns. But yeah some restrictions on the type of weapon and caliber under 16 or under 14 would be a good idea.

My dad did teach me how to use a firearm when i was really young but it was using my own .22 caliber small riffle intead of his own punp action shotguns or 303 british riffle.

Floating, there isnt 1 good reason, not 1.  Anyone with sense would not put a fully automatic weapon in the hands of a 9-yr old.

That was my opinion too.  I can see maybe a kid that age being taught the beginnings of gun safety with a BB gun, but a fully automatic weapon? That's just completely nuts...

At least it was only the moron who gave her the Uzi that died... Small comfort for the kid, but better than her getting killed, too!

The issue is not about teaching kids how to handle a firearm but giving a 9 year old kid an Uzi to play with. As I previously stated, who the hell actually needs an Uzi?

The parents were obviously planning a drive-by shooting and wanted an extra gun hand.

Parents = Darwin Award 2014

Unfortunately, only the instructor gets the award since he's the only one dead.

There is nothing wrong with teaching children to properly shoot a firearm.  With that being said, you don't start them out with an Uzi.  Here is how I started them.

1. Rifle that shoots stainless steel BBs.

2. 22 Rifle.

3. 9mm pistol with 0 rounds in the chamber.

4. 9mm pistol with 1 round in the chamber.

The children really enjoyed the range with BBs.  It wasn't as loud and they had fun. They also enjoyed the 22 Rifle as it was very easy to handle but was semi auto and able to be quickly fired again. I did have to re-teach them to aim between each shot as my first son only hit the target with about 3 out of the 10 rounds. The only reason I let them try the 9mm at ages 9 and 10 was so that they realized they were not ready for it.  No way would I have had multiple rounds in it when they couldn't handle it

Children should be playing with toys, not lethal weapons. Water pistols and nerf guns are much more fun and don't carry anywhere near the same risk.

This girl will need extensive therapy just to have a semblance of a normal life, all because of the reckless actions of her parents and the firearms instructor.

No reason why kids can't shoot guns. However an Uzi is a bit much....I question the intelligence of a person who thought handing a fully automatic weapon to a 9 year old would be a good idea.

>

Agreed. UZI's don't kick much being a 9mm, but on auto-fire (very few commercially available UZI's have this) it's the repetition that causes muzzle jump.

Small people, even adults, often have trouble with muzzle jump. This guy was dumb, and paid for it.

I was about 8 and started shooting with a recurve bow and a Crosman .22 pellet rifle. At 10 I progressed from a .22 bolt action rifle to a lever action .30-30, prepping for deer hunting at 12 (current law allows escorted hunting younger.) First semi-auto was another .22 rifle. Then it was a semi-auto 30-06. First revolver at 18, first semi-auto pistol at 21.

Taught my kids in a similar manner, and their kids are being taught that way too - gradually increasing recoil and firing rate.

Whether you agree or not, it is currently part of the American way of life, respect that and those who agree with it.

What about the Americans who disagree?

Also, just because something's a "way of life" doesn't mean that it deserves respect.  The death penalty is also an American way of life - does it deserve automatic respect?  How about Saudi Arabians chopping off people's hands?

I think it would be best if moderators didn't tell people what to think.

I apoligise if you feel that is what I was saying, I'm telling anyone what to think, I'm asking people to respect people for what they think. There are ways to convey disagreement, and using the words "inbred & deluisional" (IMO) to describe members or people with a specific belief (whatever that may be) is not the way. That's not only because I personally believe what I wrote, it's part of the Community Rules.

Again, if what I wrote seemed to suggest peoples opinin of Americans from outside of America, that was not what was intended. We should show respect to an American who is against the current Gun laws just as much as you should respect an American who is in favour.

At the rate you lot are going, you need us back! :p

Neither the Portuguese or the USians could trust you again when involving (military) advances in our territory.

I'm not going to debate on the USian side but their response to your action and advances during the colonial war is the prepare-yourselves-grab-a-weapon-militia-make-militia set in their constitution), but on the Portuguese side I can dig into it.

The matter of is that when Napoleon tried to converge all Europe into his new Empire and ordered the blockage we were your only friends (Treaty of Windsor best-buddies-for-life, remember?) and entry-point to fight back.

Our repay for being awesome to England was that you took over our country for several years and went on with the pillaging what Napoleon started. But in the end, it just another invasion, and it didn't instigate the same militia-readiness that you got in the USA.

tl;dr: The whole gun-and-militia mentality was a response to what you delivered to them on the colonial war.

Portugal suffered a lot too on your hands, but we didn't care in the end.

Not a joke or trolling: the reason why that 9-year-old-girl was learning to use a UZI is because her parents deemed she needed that knowledge under the protective banner of the 2nd amendment of the USA constitution. She was not purchasing a weapon, just practicing at training location.

The instructor did not object to that, got payed, and did (poorly) his job.

What is sane to them is not necessarily meant to be sane to us.

There is NO justifiable reason to put an automatic weapon in the hands of a child.  Possibly you can justify her learning self defense with a more age appropriate weapon, but absolutely not something as powerful as an Uzi.  The instructor was a bloody idiot and got what he deserved.  The girl now has to live with the guilt of what happened, and her parents have to live with the guilt of what they did to their daughter.

Even other American's in here can't fathom a 9 yo girl using an Uzi.

I know that, you know that, her parents don't. And you can't bend the arm of such people.

You think they are going to live with guilt? In their mind they are right.

Just wow.  Such conditioning.

:|

Why? As a child I was around and shot guns all the the time. Never managed to kill anyone with them. Whats more so were all the people in my family (as kids). And even more, my cousins, brother, and sister who have kids? Yeah, they've  been around guns too as young ones and never managed to kill anyone as well!  Shocking, I know!

Guns don't just automatically take over their users will and force them to do evil things when them you know?

Taking this a little deeper I'm sure you guys would be even more shocked to learn that kids shoot guns EVERY DAY, especially in summer. Kids all across the country. And for the most part never kill anyone or anything but targets with them.

However giving a 9 year old girl a gun that she doesn't have the training or strength to control is just stupid. I don't disagree with that at all. But sure, let's go ahead and blame guns for all the stupid things people in this world do. At the end of the day the guy chose to let her operate that gun. The gun itself had no say in it.

Then again, I'm sure you guys only read the first few words of my post and probably won't read this entire one either.

And Nik L. I'm sure you would be even more surprised to learn that in the rural parts of the country underaged children do all of those things but vote (and they might even vote). And you don't hear about it? You know why? Because they don't kill anyone and they're trusted to do those things. In farm country (which is large part of the crentral US) children under the age of 16 driving vehicles around or operating heavy machinery is actually pretty common.

Introduce stupid into the equation and people die. No surprise there.

Even with training it is still stupid. There is a reason why kids are not allowed to drive cars. To handle firearms, it is even freaking retarded. But I guess, in the land of the free, Murica, where a kid can throw a grenade at you is not an unexpected event.

Hand grenade unexpected? What are you on about? If that's what you really think about the US then we really have nothing else to talk about. No amount of words to the contrary will work for you.

It is called America.  Get it right.

With that said, this was a case of a few adults being really stupid, period.  I know a lot of kids who are more responsible around firearms than a lot of adults are.  If properly trained and supervised, its not a problem.  Obviously that didn't happen here.  And I know a lot of kids that can drive cars just fine.  Lots of farms around here where kids drive trucks/tractors on their land.  There is also a lot more that goes in to operating a vehicle and there is a matter of being tall enough to reach the peddles, see over the dash.  Which most kids cannot.

Why?  They go through the same training as anyone else and most are responsible like most adults are.  An Uzi is to extreme and should not have happened.
