When did you request the invite? Did you donate to the IndieGoGo? I wasn't able to but did sign up for an invite a month or so ago and have yet to receive my invite.

I think Protonmail is a great idea, while I hate the name, I agree with the need for encryption and privacy. I've been following it for a while as it's been discussed quite a lot over at /r/bitcoin.

That said, I think we're long overdue for a complete replacement of e-mail.

No sir I did not donate anything.

Fairly long time ago I did the request. I am not at home now so I can't look for the confirmation mail but will update you on this later.

I have no idea if this mail service is save but I think if any country can claim somewhat close to neutrality it's definitely Switzerland.

I just logged into my account for the first time today. It's a really basic email service and I enjoy it.

I just wish they open sourced it completely.

FYI PGP has been available for Gmail/Outlook/Yahoo for a long time if you are willing to install software on your PC to decrypt the emails.

how is this better then    ?

i quite like the neomailbox.ch  it is a pay service though...and the name sounds slightly less retarded then protonmail.

however i will be willing to try to get into protonmail too, if there are additional benefits.  i am guessing it is free?

but i think paying for service actually is preferable, since you are making a business deal with them, and they have income source, other then scanning your email

and that both sides have to install software for it was the annoying thing. honestly, most people i email with don't even know about it or would not know how to set it up.

so i think protonmail is a good alternative.

Yes, its a free service. ProtonMail doesn't scan your email because it doesn't have access to your mail. All the encrypting and decrypting takes place on your PC in the browser.

Yeah, that is very true. The ProtonMail encrypted emails are pretty neat. You can even set the email expiration for how many hours after being read that people can't read them any more.

cool beans.   yeah, i did not like the software solution.

However, what is the business model here?    They must serve you ads of something?  Just without scanning?

Right now they are getting money from their crowdsourcing, and in the future they will be offering paid accounts with more storage space and potentially custom domain names.

Unfortunately, a wrong command typed by one of our developers resulted in corrupting the messages table which resulted in losing messages for most of Sunday and the earlier part of Monday (about 20 hours).

No thanks.

It's a really early beta that they opened. This type of behavior is kind of expected...

I don't expect professionals to make such large mistakes - beta or otherwise.

Encrypted email has it's place and need, but I bet most of you don't need it, it's pointless for 99% of normal email use and a huge waste of resources to use like that, we use it at work IF needed  and we deal in PHI/PII and even that is a small percentage of daily email use

It was just released within the last few weeks. I've got it, it's easy as hell to use. Rather nice too.
