The 3DS army of machines continues to grow. During this morning's Direct video conference, Nintendo revealed the latest addition: The New Nintendo 3DS. a faster version of the beloved handheld that features better battery life, larger screens, better 3D, and a new "C-stick" analog pad.

The New Nintendo 3DS is slated to release in Japan on October 10 and will be offered two ways: The standard edition (retailing for 16,000 yen ($154), and the XL version for 18,800 yen ($181). Release dates for other territories are yet to be announced.

The standard edition ships in two colors: black and white. The XL version is being offered in a metallic black and metallic white. All of these versions feature new face button colors which mimic the color arrangement from the Super Famicom. The hardware features slight changes, like the game card reader moved to the front of the device along with the stylus and power buttons.

The new C-stick will get an early workout with a number of upcoming games. Dragon Quest X: Online, Monster Hunger 4G, and Final Fantasy Explorers will all use this new control method. The New 3DS will also have built in NFC, to make use of the upcoming Amiibo figures.

So in addition to the new little nubby c-stick thing, there are ZR and ZL buttons:

OK. Also has NFC for Amiibos & the SD card is in a different place:

  • -Faster CPU

-Greater viewing angles with 3D effect on (getting that "sweet spot" should be much less of a hassle)

-Integrated Right Circle Pad and zL/zR buttons

-Super Famicom (EU SNES) color-matching face buttons (button letters on the New XL)

-Built-in NFC for Amiibo compatibility (older models would've needed a wireless base to use Amiibo features... I wonder if the 3DS Skylanders games could get a system update to use this, too?)

-Improved web browser, including video support

-Home menu themes (this is also coming to 3DS/3DS XL/2DS with the October system update)

-Faster internet speeds/downloads

-Improved cameras. They're not gonna replace your phone's camera by a longshot, but they will be somewhat less grainy and capture light better.

-MicroSD slot is under the bottom cover, instead of a normal SD slot on the side (which sounds good to me; my SD card ejected in my pocket somehow once)

-Support for wireless file transfers. You won't need to take the SD card out anymore to transfer pictures and audio between the New 3DS models and a PC.

-Longer battery lives than previous models.

-The new models will also auto-adjust screen brightness to save battery, as well as based on the surrounding light.

-The New 3DS XL comes in Metallic Blue and Metallic Black. The New 3DS comes in black and white, with interchangeable outer shells (with a lot of design options planned).

-The New 3DS has slightly bigger screens than the original model (the New 3DS XL has the same screen size as the original 3DS XL).

Some new games will be unplayable on the older 3DS'. The new Xenoblade Chronicles, for example will only run on the new 3DS.

wow, that's actually sounding promising

I wasn't planning to trade in my 3DS XL any time soon w/ the new models but I may just for a handful of those new hardware features

Love the new features, but really dislike the design.

Annoyed they've cut the userbase in half with the CPU change (N)

This is not surprising at all. Remember they did the same with Gameboy Color, so games will still work on both but will have some enhancements on the newer 3DS model.

Not surprising no, just annoying.

This won't be the last iteration of the 3DS either. We all know that.

Well, we don't know that for sure. It could be the last one since they usually only do about three or four per generation.

i have no idea why anyone might still want to buy a handheld gaming device when iOS and android hardware is far superior and more flexibility in every way other than lacking some nintendo exclusive game.

^ For real? I can't think of any mobile games that rival that of dedicated handhelds.

Customizable Cover Plates

Gamers in Japan will get a couple of special edition version of the new 3DS to choose from (a Monster Hunter 4G version and one with a collection of familiar Nintendo characters). However, every new 3DS will be able to be customized by new aftermarket cover plates, which will sell separately. In the announcement video, Nintendo showed off a myriad of cover plates, featuring everything from simple geometric designs like black and white checkerboard to graphics featuring iconic Nintendo characters and designs. While no U.S. release information has been given, the Japanese cover plate price will be 1000 yen, around $9.60 USD.

Nintendo will also be selling new charge bases for the handhelds.

Ugh I'm really hoping that Xenoblade being exclusive to the new system doesn't become a trend, otherwise I'll be effectively forced to upgrade my old system in a year or so. Not good. The comparison to the GBC doesn't really stand though in that Xenoblade most likely requires the new model since it has those additional buttons and the C-stick.

In terms of design I definitely prefer the new one though, give me a plain black new XL (Since I got the standard this time).

In that case, don't buy it because if only a small amount of people buy it, then maybe Nintendo will their lesson and be forced to make it compatible with the older models.

Well here's hoping there won't be a game that comes out that requires it that I really want!

My first thought was WTF NINTENDO, but now after looking at some discussions I'm fine with it. Nintendo seem to have somewhat of a track record to doing this with their handhelds; DSi comes to mind, as well as others. I highly doubt there will be a large amount of exclusives because of how many 3DS's there are out there. Although if it proves to be highly successful, there may be more...

What I could see, though, is maybe games that release on both, with the new 3DS offering a graphical improvement...one game that comes to mind is Pok?mon, which lags when you have 3D turned on in battles.

I never even use the damn 3D on mine. I thought the general consensus was no one did.

I played Shovel Knight exclusively in 3D, and it looked great. Really gave it an added layer of depth.

It all depends on the game for myself.
