iphone replacement question

Recommended Posts

alright i got a replacement phone (iphone 5) yesterday, and the deal was not to restore my device so i could use ios 5/6 (is it 5 or 6 when it gets initially launched?) but then they restored my info and obviously it gets upgraded to 7 - i've realized this after walking out of the store and went home. anyways i can fight this back w them tmrw so i can get a replacement again? (it's still under warranty)

It's not possible to go back to 5 or 6. IIRC they won't offer support until you're on the latest OS your phone supports. You either stick with whatever issue you had, or upgrade and get your phone sorted.

Andrew is right. Apple do not even have phones anymore that are running iOS 5 or 6. All Apple devices are running iOS 7 regardless.

All replacement phones they have now will come with iOS 7. iPhone stock turns around quickly, so they won't have any left that don't have iOS 7 (best case is you get 7.0.*).

And you won't get another replacement since there's nothing wrong with the phone

Not all...

My brother has iPad Mini running iOS 6.   not sure what version number but I know he's running iOS 6. His wife has iPad Mini running iOS 7.

I told him to upgrade but he didn't want to. He rather to keep iOS 6 as long as he can.

If you run iOS 6 on your device and have many apps, then you might want to upgrade to iOS 7 or so because the 'updated' apps will require you to upgrade iOS to meet the app requirement.

If you have a very few apps, then you can stay on iOS 6 as long as you like.

You misunderstood what I said. If you get the device from the apple store, apple.com, etc NOW its running iOS7. If you purchased it before iOS7 came out then, sure you can stay on whatever iOS version you are running because its up to you to update it.

I know what YOU meant... but like I said, NOT ALL.

Depends where you got the device from.   They don't update before hand it to you...  you update it yourself.. or leave it alone.

If you get it from the retail store, they don't update by itself unless you turn it on and update it yourself.

I told my brother that iOS 7 has improved the battery life...  he was like "what?" and he can't decide to update or not. That's why he keeps iOS6 longer..

I have seen some people on here and elsewhere that they have iOS 6 on their devices to this day.

Because of the quick turnover of Apple replacements, its almost guaranteed that ALL replacements now come with iOS7. Similarly if you buy any device new from Apple it'll have iOS7 loaded. As you say, its not preloaded in store, but rather comes out the factory now with iOS7. Only very slow moving stock from quiet 3rd party shops will likely have old stock still with iOS6.

So replacements are almost guaranteed to be iOS7 in summary. New stock you should be able to tell with the box artwork.

  • 3 weeks later...

You can have a try, have some software that will help the apple system be came back.

If you can't do it youself, you can ask someone help you.

No. The only devices that can be downgraded to previous versions of iOS right now are iPhone 4, iPad 2, and previous. For those device to be downgraded, the user would have to have had to have captured the SHSH blob file using a utility like TinyUmbrella or the Cydia SHSH server thing.  With that and the firmwarm IPSW file, there is a utility out there that can "stitch" the IPSW and the SHSH blob together so that the device does not need to authenticate itself with Apple's server in order to be activated. If this was not done while the previous iOS version was installed, there is no way to go back and get it.  That point is mostly moot in this discussion since the OP is discussing an iPhone 5.

iH8sn0w (an iOS hacker/jailbreaker) said this on his twitter feed:

oh btw. Got another (pre-64bit iDevices) downgrade hack. Really complex. Hope to talk about it at the next @Jailbreakcon :)

So there is a possibility that at some point a downgrade an iPhone 5 to iOS6 will be available but we will have to wait and see if this guys work is genuine and comes to surface.

iOS 5 was never available for iPhone 5 (IIRC, it was launched along side iOS 6).

Unless you are in a situation where your iPhone requires a restore. Then Apple will force you to update to the latest version of iOS.
