need help choosing a graphics card upgrade for my PC

Recommended Posts

I have an older PC, and would like to improve it's performance when gaming. Nothing too intense, just some simple games, and would like to have an FPS of 30+ when running on Mid graphical settings.

My PC specs:

HP Pavilion p6-2120

AMD Quad-core A6-3620 Accelerated Processor

6GB of DDR3 Ram

AMD Radeon HD 6530D Discrete graphics.

I know certain information regarding the power supply is important, however I'm not too computer savy, so I hope any information you may need can be found here:

I want to upgrade my graphics card to something better.

I was looking at the XFX HD-667X-CDF3 Radeon HD 6670 2GB 128-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1

Can my PC run that video card? And the PassMark benchmark rankes it higher than my current 6530D graphics card, would it be a definite improvement?

And I am welcome to any recommendations you may have. My budget is $100-150. And I thought the one listed above would be a good idea.

Questions: Can my PC run that graphics card without a problem?

Will I see a definite improvement? Any recommendations?

It would "probably" be fine.  If you experience crashes or weird behavior, then definitely look at upgrading PSU, but you wouldn't need to go crazy on it.

You would get MUCH better performance from a 7770, and they have one at $95 on Newegg.  $75 after rebate.  Not sure with that CPU, though.  There is a point where you won't see better performance because you're limited by CPU.  I've only been following the Intel chips.  Gave up on AMD a few years ago.

You can get a Corsair 430W for $44 or 500W for $50.

Those two together would put you just under $150.

You PC has a 300W PSU of questionable quality most likely, but like frameunit said, it might be sufficient. Speaking of frameunit's suggestion, there's a R5 250X (rebranded 7770) that is 60$ after rebate. Anyway, here are mine:

Option 1 (better price/performance ratio, but power consumption might be too high):

Gigabyte R7 260X 2GB - better specs and cooling than the Sapphire, but it might be too big for your case (needs to be checked)

Sapphire R7 260X 2GB - should fit with no issues

Option 2 (half the power consumption and slightly better performance, but a lot more expensive):

PNY GeForce 750Ti 2GB - without premier, the initial price is over budget

MSI  GeForce 750Ti 2GB - a lot better cooling and higher frequencies, but also also over budget without premier and rebate, and very likely too big for the case
