PC hangs with black screen at startup

Recommended Posts

The following problem has me puzzled:

One of the PCs at work suddenly hangs with a black screen and mouse cursor upon boot. There haven't been any driver updates or Windows updates since it last worked on Friday.

The hard drive activity LED is indicating some activity. Any idea what's going on?

What I'm going to attempt next is: Boot in safe mode, then check the event logs.

How old is it? It could just need a bath and an inside scrubbing. LOL

I once spilled a lil bit of ice cream on my laptop and it got inside and this is how it was acting the next day or similar

So i took it apart, brushed all the inside components with isopropyl alcohol and a soft tooth brush and it worked like new again once I put it back together after letting it dry for a day.

Good luck!

When you try to boot in safe mode, what file is the last file listed before it hangs up?  That could give you the clue you need.  Google "Safe mode boot hangs on ............"

Try booting with a Windows DVD/USB. Go to the repair options. Choose the top option of advanced tools. Choose Command prompt and run a checkdisk (chkdsk C: /F ) let it run and reboot and see if that helps. Sometimes you have to change the drive letter to D or E depending what the boot drives show up as during the first repair options screen.
