Looking to get a new TV

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I currently have a Sony KDL-32L5000 and I'm looking to buy a new TV. A lot of things have changed since I last bought a TV so I have a few questions.

What would you all recommend in the 42 inch range?

LCD,LED or Plasma?

And what about hertz? 60,120, 240?

Some features I would like it to have are 3D,1080p.

I will be mainly using it for gaming on my PS4 and watching bluray movies.

Thanks for the help in advanced. :)

I definately only recommend 2 brands right now.

LG and sony Samsung.           Depending on your budget,  they have low end and high end models, but they are the only serious competitors in LCD market right now

Samsung series 6 are positioned near the perfect range of functions/look/price combination.

cant help you with 3D advice, since i don't use it, but I hear both samsung and lg excel in it.

you DEFINATELY don't want 60Hz...   and, depending on the budget (and possibly 3d)  you definately want 240.     though LG uses a different Hrz thing through software, i guess...

anyway, you have to see in the store, before you buy.   also LG is running on WebOS and Samsung is running Android on their smart TV, so if you plan to use apps, see what each one has first.  I got LG and I love it, but it does not have a app for my foreign TV channels provider

....post in process...

Curious why you would recommend Sony when they don't even make their own panels.  You could get a TV from the "original" manufacturer, save money and have the exact same panel.

no no no no

samsung.    somehow i mistyped!   right after, i recommend samsung series 6 lcd as the best quality TVs with great functionality for a reasonable amount of money.

I still have an older Sony Bravia, and some of their new tvs are very nice, but as you said, there is no objective reason to buy them!   Only LG and Samsung.

Thank you for the replies. I'll check out those brands.

forgot to way, you want LED..   lcd without led just don't look as good!

and forget the plasmas for now,  i would only consider them if i was a sports fan, and my tv was in my basement (or low light room)

definately not great to connect your PC to them either,  if you want to connect your PC/laptop or even phone - do not get plasma.

I have not tried plasma in a while but the last time i tried one it was a NO GO as a TV connected to an htpc.

Maybe this could help:

http://www.cnet.com/topics/tvs/best-tvs/

It constantly gets updated and have detailed reviews. You can choose a size category or TV type on the left side too. Don't just take their word though. It's cnet, after all.

pfff, cnet.       seriously tough,

best to set your budget  (mine was $1300, but due to sales, i ended up with much more expensive TV)

then go to a store, and check out LG, Samsung, or Sharp (yeah, sharp is ok too) in the price range..

check out the picture, talk to the employees, look at sales (last year models of high end tvs are the best bet, but that usually only found in Jan-March)

then go to another store with large stock.   compare the tvs/prices and recommendations.

then, before buying, go online and search for better prices. if found, buy online :)

i really only recommend Samsung, but i hear LG makes nice sets.

My Samsung set does 3D really well. It takes a few seconds for your eyes to adjust, but it's fantastic. dont use it too often, though. The pq is amazing. I still cant believe how good it looks.

I bought my MY2012 Samsung in 2013 and saved like 50% off MSRP. You might try that route, as well.
