Bought a 4K Monitor!

Recommended Posts

Bought myself the Asus PB287Q (Catchy name I know). With DisplayPort it is capable of running 4K res at 60Hz. It's a little sparse on inputs compared to my old Monitor, features 1 x DisplayPort, 2 x HDMI, 1 audio jack.

It's glorious! Apologies for the bad photos. My phone isn't the best indoors.

Now to the good stuff.

Here is how big my browser window is, this used to almost be fullscreen on my old 1440p monitor. With some room down the side for Skype.

Here is a 1920x800 Blu-Ray movie playing at native res

It has this "Picture in Picture" mode. Where it displays 2 sources at the same time. Although I won't be using it. Here it is with my PS4 on the top right.

The alternate mode is "Picture by picture" where they get equal space.

you have a HL2 cap?  :woot:

Yeah, wanted a baseball hat for a Music festival in the Summer and figured I may as well get one that I'd actually want to own, instead of a generic branded one.

congrats

though as a sucker for a an attractive design, i find it hard to like what asus did here.    the panel is nice, but the stand looks "slightly" outdated.

but whatever, as soon as you love the picture, that what matters.

But the resolutions is till awesome and would love to have it.

Any issues with application scaling, especially older (WinXP-era) programs?

Try any games yet?

So far I've only played Skyrim, Eve Online and Left 4 Dead 2.

I had to remove EnbSeries, being the most demanding mod, but after that I was able to get a solid 60 on Ultra with all my texture mods.

Eve Online I had to turn AA down to 2X. Which is all games really need at 4K on a screen this size. There's hardly any alisiing.

Left 4 Dead 2 would start flickering to the desktop whenever I set the resolution to 4K, however I learnt that you have to disable AA to get it running. After that rock solid 60FPS.

My friend with a 4K screen and a GTX 770 says he can hit 60FPS in demanding games iif he runs them at a combination of medium/high instead of Ultra. But he claims medium at 4K looks better than high/ultra at 1080p.

I havent ran any legacy apps yet, only newer ones like Chrome, VLC, Photoshop CS6, Office 2013, Skype and Steam.

Cool.

Don't you need a 4K video card now ?

I guess if I want to run new AAA games at max settings. But that's not a priority for me.

How is the resolution scaling on Windows?

Pretty decent. I've increased the font size on the right click menu. Can change it on individual elements too.

Dragging the scaler bar also makes everything bigger.

Nice monitor, but I couldn't possibly bear using a 28inch monitor with a TN panel, I would have to sit like 2 meters away to reduce the vertical color shifting to tolerable.

but if you're not using it for anything graphical and color shifting doesn't bother you, then it's a good price for a good monitor.

Frontpage text & promo are still too big for 4K  :D

Nice monitor and nice to see you're getting good performance with excellent quality out of it. Hopefully you play through HL2 with your HL2 cap on at 4K with max settings.
