Is OnePlus One Purposefully Being Ironic?

I just feel like OnePlus is trying to mock the current smart phone industry and maybe the whole electronics industry as a whole:

 

First off, they create a lot of hype from nothing, claim it will be the best thing ever made, etc.

The name kind of sounds like it pokes fun at the tendency to name things with ones. HTC One, Xbox One, etc.

Then the invite system sounds like it is trying to show how bad invite systems are, or how silly they are for consumers.

I think the Smash the Past campaign, the one where you destroy your old phone to get a OnePlus One for $1, is a joke on the materialist society we live in today, we will do anything for an object.

Then the Ladies First campaign might be a critic on the use of women in showcases and advertising, or maybe objectifying in general.

 

I don't know, I could be wrong and OnePlus could just be this horrible because of no foresight.

Frankly it's irrelevant company. Nobody knows about phone and nobody cares. It might good phone but android it wont make even a dipple. The only companies that matter are Samsung and some chinese companies thats it.

Sorry but Nokia/Microsoft, Google, HTC, Lenovo, and Apple don't matter?

Frankly they're an irrelevant company. Nobody knows about that phone and nobody cares. It might be a good phone but with android it wont make even a dipple ( :huh: ). The only companies that matter are Samsung and some chinese companies thats it.

Many things are misunderstood. Most importantly, we must realize that it is a Chinese company and that they have a completely separate culture to what is in the West. They are trying to appeal to the West through a Chinese lens, which is why some things are not coming across as strange.

They introduced it as a 'smartphone killer,' which it is. It has (had?) many features that smartphones lack at the time of announcement and it was priced extremely low, coupled with things like Cyanogen out of the box makes it extremely different to typical devices.

The invite system dragged on for longer than it needed to, however invite systems are not bad on their own. Gmail, for example, started off as an invite-only system, and people could invite up to 50 others. The invite system without a doubt created a lot of hype. 
 
What a lot of people don't understand about the invite system however is that it was intended to act as an indirect barrier to their low quantity of stock and slow production.

This was purely a viral media campaign. In essence, nothing was gained or lost. If you smashed your phone, you still gained a new phone for $1. It wasn't purely a competition-- OnePlus pre-selected the people who were going to smash their phones, so it was a guaranteed win.

This is the major Western-Chinese disconnect. Although the West is getting constantly more progressive by the month, China is not experiencing such a quick women's rights movement. It was a distasteful campaign however it wasn't malicious in intent.

Exactly this. Once we consider that they are a foreign company and different culture attempting to enter a Western market, and once we consider that they have very low stock, most of their actions begin to make sense.
 
I was personally interested in a OnePlus One, however the invite system was just too much to deal with.

You need to remember that Samsung spent $14 billion on marketinglast year, One Plus basically spent nothing and have managed to make their first product go viral. Tech websites have given the phone amazing reviews, i dont think they could really ask for much more. One Plus did something different and has mostly worked fantastic for them.

 

The only thing i think has really hurt them is the invite system (look at their Facebook), as people would sooner just pre-order something and get it when their place in the line comes up.

 

Personally having owned a OnePlus One since June it really does put all the flagship devices out there at present to shame. The software is spot on, and the hardware / battery life is fantastic.

 

One Plus did something different, and have shown a high end phone can be released for a fraction of the cost of which the big names currently are. I know that if i'm looking to buy another phone in a few years time i'll certainly feel ripped off paying ?500-700 for an iPhone / Samsung or HTC flagship device (not that I would ever spend anywhere near that on a phone)

Had mine a few weeks now and love it. 

 

Yes it was a different marketing method but the launch of almost any flagship is dogged with unavailability. As a start-up company it was a wise choice to gauge interest and use viral marketing saving a real fortune, which is how they can reach the price point for such high end specs.

 

I got my invite and ordered it straight away and sold my Galaxy S4 on Ebay for ?240. The One only cost me ?270 so hell of a cheap upgrade and when my contract is up next April, I can just get sim-only instead of a 24month contract.

 

They are now aiming to remove the invite system by October.

I heard that from a One Plus owner too. If they do and manage to meet demand they have a very good phone that will sell.

You just have to see the number of people begging for invites or paying ?30+ on ebay for them. It will sell because it's a good phone at twice the price they are asking. At ?270, using the value = quality X price method, there is no better value phone. It's just hard to get hold of!
