I have always seen having a Smart Watch as more of a trend than a necessity. I have recently started a new job where I am constantly getting emails and text messages from my job all day long.  I carry two phones now on me, one personal and one company phone.   This has had me thinking of finding an easier way to view my messages while my hands are full without having to dig through my pockets to grab my phone.

Aside from the obvious time keeping and messaging (retrieval), what do you use your Smart Watch for?

I stopped wearing a watch years ago, amazing how your brain can guesstimate the time.

I dont want to start wearing a wristwatch type device as for me, at the moment they serve no purpose and are a unnecessary expense.

They need to come up with something a lot better to stop me reaching for my pocket and picking out my phone.

  • 8 months later...

I recently received my Apple Watch Sport and I must say that it has really pleased me. Despite the cost (I got a rebate on my old phone so it didn't cost me nearly as much) and the reported recharging needed each day, I have found the watch to be extremely useful. I really do not even need to take my phone out of my pocket. I can control my music, text, talk on the phone, receive mail and messages, and activate all sorts of apps on my wrist.

I have found that the true worth of the Apple Watch is not realised until you use it for yourself. Then you can determine if it suits your needs or not.

I got a Moto 360 and for the most part it actually is useful for quickly reading text / social messages (Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber, etc.) as well as launching the navigation. In addition, its decent at controlling music playback too. I have yet to store my music directly on the watch though... until at least the WiFi option becomes enabled since the Bluetooth connection is not great for moving music files around in a quick enough fashion.

I barely change the watch faces much these days but did acquire several of the paid ones. Currently rocking the Pujie Black one.

I can't leave the house without it these days.

I use mine to alert me on Emails and other notifications.

it works great when your phone isn't next to you and even better when you can't hear your phone because you are mowing the lawn.

So yesterday I was vacuuming my stairs, the phone was in my pocket, all of the sudden my wrist goes Bzz Bzz Bzz Bzz, I looked at my wrist and it said "Becky was calling" ... so I shut off my vacuum and sure enough, my phone was going off in my pocket.

I also created my own watch face. I wanted a watch face that very simple and showed just that. Oddly enough I had a hard time finding one, so I made my own,.

Convenient way to look at text/calls/etc.  Between that and Pushbullet I can keep my phone stowed away most of the time.

Things have changed on my end since I first wrote the OP.  New job, new location, new demands.  I still have not taken the plunge to get a smartwatch, but have been very tempted in the recent months.

For me, I am still thinking I would benefit from one in terms of seeing text messages by my watch or seeing certain notifications (weather mostly), on it and now fitness tracking.  Aside from that though, I can not totally see myself responding to texts or whatever on it.  I am partly thinking about waiting until whenever the next gen ones come out which I'd imagine will be this year at least on the Android front to see if battery life has improved as well as some of the designs.

It's stupidly handy, got the desktop app running on my devices, can respond to texts, dismiss notifications, send stuff back and forth between devices, file manager integration.. damn good for a freebie. There's browser plugins too if you want to send stuff between browsers.

I know, when I saw it in action and replied to a text from my desktop I was like..

I use pushbullet all the time.  I always have my phone out, but I find it way more convenient to respond to texts on it vs on the phone.  It's good for sending links to myself from my phone while on the shitter.
