network setup on new computer

Recommended Posts

I'm building a new computer and almost have everything I need. I have a dual-band router connected to my old computer, which currently only supports the 2.4Ghz band. I have other devices which support both the 2.4 and the 5GHz band. What I was wondering is if I could use the network port on the Asus Z97-A board to get my initial Internet connection and then add a network adapter at a later point?

im not so sure i follow you, but i dont think you can do what youre asking.

Are you suggesting that your new computer is going to have a wifi-addon card or you want to use the wifi on the motherboard?

what do you mean by the dual-band router is connected to your old computer?

perhaps explain your situation further.

2.4 and 5GHz have nothing to do with plugging anything into a network port on any motherboard. Too much information that has nothing to do with the question at hand.

The answer to this question:

What I was wondering is if I could use the network port on the Asus Z97-A board to get my initial Internet connection and then add a network adapter at a later point?

is yes!

why would you want to add a wifi card if the thing has a wired nic? Like saying hey the engine in my car is too fast, can you limit it to only go 55 mph. I don't like driving on the Autobahn -- I want to drive on the dirt country road in my Porsche ;)

This is the description of the LAN port on the Asus Z97-A.

Intel? I218V, 1 x Gigabit LAN, Dual interconnect between the Integrated Media Access Controller (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY)
Gigabit Intel? LAN Connection- 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) appliance

I'd like to make sure that no additional hardware is needed in order to get the network setup.
