Which Cheap Laptop

Recommended Posts

I need a cheap laptop for work mainly, but on the side I'd also like to play AA 2.5 (I can't find system specs), the game came out in 2005 so I'm assuming both these laptops can handle the game.

I'm looking at the Acer Aspire 11.6" Laptop and the Asus 15.6" Laptop

Just need help decided which one I should get. I will be mainly using it for traveling and to kill downtime when traveling.

ASUS.  Just better build quality and more reliable laptop.  Only thing the Acer really has going for it is that is is lighter.  Get more hardware with the ASUS for not that much more money.

i would also consider the hp 255g1/g2 modells as a possible choice.

Okay, well the game recommended requirements for America's Army 2.8.3 (not the version I want to run) is:

CPU Speed: 3.0 GHz processor or equivalent

RAM: 1 GB

OS: English version of Windows® 2000/XP/Vista Operating System with latest updates

Video Card: 3-D graphics card with 256mb+ memory and support for hardware transformation and lighting

DirectX version: DirectX® 9.0

Sound Card: Yes

Free Disk Space: 3.5gb of uncompressed hard disk space for game files

So can the ASUS handle it?

You can get a Dell that is identical spec-wise to the Asus for $199 at MicroCenter if you have one near you http://www.microcenter.com/product/434010/Inspiron_15_156_Laptop_Computer_-_Black

And those specs for AA were based on the hardware available at the time which is why it says dumb things like "3.0 GHz" when the Pentium 4's of the era needed to run that fast to get decent performance.

It's difficult to say, the spec lists a CPU speed that is faster than any of the above models however I suspect given the age of the game it may be referring to a single core so getting something that is dual core will make up for that. I suspect it would run it ok.

if i could get valid login data for americas army i would give it a try on my hp notebook to let you know if it works but all i get is spam emails so far.

but as i see it(

HP 255 G1 Notebook PC (H0W17EA)

includes AMD Radeon? HD 7340 Graphics this might be not ennough to play modern games.

however, the other 2 you look after are even worse, i would not wanna play a game on an 11' inch screen.

an used notebook via ebay might be the best solution for you.

What's your system specs and how about the frames per second?

this is my system:

HP 255 G1 Notebook PC (H0W17EA)

it cost me about 300 euros but that was february/march this year. so either you get it cheaper now or you can get even higher specs for the money.

just be cautious it includes at least AMD Radeon? HD 7340 Graphics.

about frames per second? i have no idea, i played the first training mission. how can i check framerates is there a key which shows fps? or do you know which mission is fps intensive?

ok i think i have some useful info now:

glxgears gives me average about 950fps

Screenshot_from_2014_09_12_09_34_09.jpg

and when i look arround 360 in americas army (that seems to be the way to push the fps to nearly maximum) i get 57fps.

when just doing a mission it hardly ever goes over 20 - this game does not seem to be the most difficult for graphics - at least on linux

btw. the notebook comes without windows, it has ubuntu pre installed :)

edit: that guy here seems to have exactly the same notebook as me and look at the games he is playing:

hope this helps for you. i would go with the hp. it's not the thinnest and lightest notebook but i am happy with the build quality and that it comes without windows is just a plus.
